Subject: BS: OW! ....... still! From: folk1e Date: 19 Apr 08 - 05:47 PM As one or two of you may know 6 weeks (and 6 days (not that I'm counting)) ago I broke my wrist. It hurt like hell! Now 5 days after they have taken the cast off, it still hurts like hell! when I asked the Doc in hospital they said this was "normal"! So after 7 weeks should I still be able to see the outline of where my watch was, surrounded by swelling (did I mention that it still hurts?)or should I stop being a wuss/whinger and just shut up. I have broken other bits before without this level of continued pain. On a bright note I asked them if I could pull my 50lb bow soon. They just looked at me with that look on their faces. When I asked if I could play the guitar any time soon they said yes!..... I didn't have the guts to tell them I couldn't play before I broke it! |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: Ebbie Date: 19 Apr 08 - 05:58 PM Wow. You mean, after seven weeks, there is still swelling? I'm no expert but the question does arise as to whether you might want to see another doctor. |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: Peace Date: 19 Apr 08 - 07:17 PM BTW, the wrist has 8 bones and there are nerves and blood vessels there that can get pinched, etc. You need an X-ray and a doctor who knows wrists. |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: Jeri Date: 19 Apr 08 - 08:06 PM I broke a bone in my hand (5th metacarpal, spiral fracture). The doctor kept me in a splint for 6 weeks because the x-rays didn't show healing. He finally referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. The orthopod told me that he NEVER keeps people in a splint for longer than three weeks because immobilization can actually cause problems (like the tendinitis I had). He also told me the x-rays don't show healing until long after, when the outer surface of the bone ages and gets dense. The way he discovered the bone had healed was by manipulating it and asking me to move it. My primary care doc had issues. Anyway, the cast could have caused problems, or there might have been something to the injury which your doctor missed. Have someone look at it. If it starts feeling better, you're probably OK, but... BUT, five days after the cast came off you still have pain and you also have the feeling that something isn't normal. Trust that feeling and push until someone takes you seriously and re-evaluates your wrist. |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Apr 08 - 11:35 PM Man, sounds awful, poor you! I've never broken a bone but I gather it's really, really, bad... worth barfing and fainting all at once. Good luck with your recovery! |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: folk1e Date: 20 Apr 08 - 04:39 PM I have seen 3 Doc's now (wonderful NHS) as well as my own GP! The Doc's at Hope (LOL) Hospital ARE specialists and they are working in a group of 3/4 at a time in the fracture clinic! She did manipulate the wrist a bit but no X-ray when the cast came off! She also said that the pain was muscular in nature and could be ignored or treated with over the counter analgesia. Thanks for the support and advice. I'm off to book an appointment with my GP Monday 8.00 AM! If the sight of me at 8 am doesn't worry him/her I'll have to give up! |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Apr 08 - 07:30 PM Okay, I broke my upper left humerus last December. I'm now 4 months along. I had to have a plate and screws to fix it -- asked the surgeon how long it would take to heal. He said 6-8 weeks. But I had asked the wrong question. Should have asked at that point, when do I start getting back to normal? At 8 weeks I was "healed" enough to start LIGHT physical therapy. I've been in therapy twice a week, pool and land, since the middle of February. I've made major gains -- after two months (from the break) I could sleep at a 45 degree angle instead of sitting bolt upright in bed all propped up in pillows. After another month (and some PT) I'm finally able to sleep horizontally, although very limited positions. (Two -- on my back and modified -- arm supported -- on my right side, not quite as "comfortable" as on my back.) After three months, I could drive a car again. THREE MONTHS. (And be able to work and thus able to look for a job.) A couple weeks ago I put clothes on over my head instead of needing something that buttons up the front. Taking them off is still a bit tricky. I have major weather-related pain and probably will have for quite awhile. A couple weeks ago (almost 4 months after the break) I turned a corner of sorts -- I no longer feel like an invalid. I'm moving better and not cringing at the thought of being jostled in a crowd, etc. My surgeon has told me I can lift things heavier than a coffee cup -- but that I'd better let the removal of some of the garden rocks displaced by the snowplow into the driveway be done by someone other than me. I'm doing a LOT of exercises and stretches in between my two physical therapy sessions, but I have a long way to go. And it's a LOT of work. (And includes some pain and stiffness that has to be worked through.) I thought "normality" would return somewhere between 6 months and a year from the break, but my surgeon told me last week that it's actually more like a year to 18 months. Normality being substantially less pain, almost full mobility, being able to sleep normally, etcet etcet. Broken bones take a lot of time to recover from. I'm 58, but even if I were younger, it would still take time. A lot of my weather-related pain is because I have a 6" stainless steel plate and 8 screws through the bone -- when the atmospheric pressure falls, tissue expands...and the plate and screws don't. At least that's one factor (and theory). Part of life's rich pageant. I managed to make it 58 years breaking only 2 toes -- and, believe me, toes don't count!!! Good wishes for your rapid recovery! |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: GUEST,Barbara Date: 22 Apr 08 - 10:22 AM I know how you all feel. Last May I broke my ankle and tore 2 ligaments. Even to this day, my ankle is not the same. I am lucky if I can WALK a mile without having to turn around and go home. It gets really sore when I walk too much and really stiff when I don't move it for a while. I have a metal plate and 7 screws too. I am at the point now that I can choose to get the metal plate and screws removed? Has anyone done this and did it help? |

Subject: RE: BS: OW! ....... still! From: folk1e Date: 23 Apr 08 - 07:04 AM Well the visit to the Doc's was worth it! After laughing at my mode of injury (I was playing Airsoft at the time) he had a good manipulate of my wrist and prescribed anti-inflamitoary's 3 times a day with food (or you will get ulcers!). He has given me a series of phisio exercises as the problem is now the tendons running through my wrist and the atrophy of muscle in my lower arm. After my quip at the hospital about playing the guitar ........ that is exactly what he reccomended! Now where should I take this prescription for a guitar to? Not sure weather this is psycosomatic or not but I do have better movement after one day of the super tablets! |
