Subject: Lyr Req: Minstrel Boy - Bob Dylan correct lyrics

Does anyone have a definitive source on the correct lyrics for the first verse of Minstrel Boy by Bob Dylan on his Self Portrait album. I can't make them out, and none of the on-line lyrics seem to be correct either. Two common versions are shown below:

Version 1:

Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it roll?
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it down easy to save his soul?

Oh, lucky's been drivin' a long, long time
And now he's stuck on top of the hill.
With twelve forward gears, it's been a long hard climb,
And with all of them ladies, though, he's lonely still.

Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it roll?
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it down easy to save his soul?

etc.

Version 2:

Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin ?
Who's gonna let it roll ?
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin ?
Who's gonna let it down easy to save his soul ?

Oh look, he's driving a long, long time
There he still sits on top of the hill
Well aching and jumping with all laid down
With all of them ladies you know he's lonely still
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin ?
Who's gonna let it roll ?
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin ?
Who's gonna let it down easy to save his soul ?

etc.

Neither the 12 forward gears or the aching and jumping lines seem correct to me.

JAB

P.S. Please don't reply, comment on, or mention the Irish song "The Minstrel Boy" here.

Well, he deep in number and heavy in toil,
Mighty Mockingbird, he still has such a heavy load.
Beneath his bound'ries, what more can I tell,
With all of his trav'lin', but I'm still on that road.

Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it roll?
Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?
Who's gonna let it down easy to save his soul?

That is from his 'official site'. I'd guess they're correct.

Peace:

Thanks, but I had already found those lyrics at the www.bobdylan.com site.

They do not match what is on the Self Portrait recording.

Peace: Yes, you are correct that the published lyrics in the book of Writings and Drawings by Bob Dylan show the lyrics for the disputed line to be:

"With twelve forward gears, it's been a long hard climb"

However, that is no where close to what he sings on the Self Portrait Album. where the last word in the line is clearly "down"

Nothing unusual about that. Bob is constantly tinkering with and changing the lyrics to his songs. They can vary considerably from one live show to another. Just pick the version you like best or combine two or three of them together.
