Subject: Tech: Corrupted DT MIDI files From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Feb 08 - 12:49 PM Somebody reported to me that the MIDI for "Texas Rangers" won't play. I tried it in Windows Media Player, and couldn't play it, either. I tried with Qicktime, and could get only the first line to play. Some of the MIDIs play just fine, and some have problems. If you come across a bad MIDI, post the url in this thread so I can give Jeff and Dick an idea how widespread the problem is - I just need a dozen or two examples, not a complete listing. Texas Rangers: http://www.mudcat.org/media/TEXRANG.MID It our MIDI files don't work, you may be able to get one at "Yet Another Digital Tradition," http://sniff.numachi.com/ Their entry for "Texas Rangers" is here: http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiTEXRANG;ttTEXRANG.html -although I notice that their MIDI doesn't work, either. I tried pasting "Yet Another's" ABC tune into concertina.net, and that displayed only a partial tune. Therefore, my guess is that the problem is in the original SongWright file in the DOS version of the Digital Traditon. Let's see if we can come up wiht a list of at least several examples of corrupted files. If you can test the file through Mudcat, "Yet Another Digital Tradition," and concertina.net and report results, that might be helpful. Maybe a uniform format would be helpful:
Media Player: no Quicktime: plays first line only Yet Another: ABC, no MIDI Concertina: displays partial tune |

Subject: RE: Tech: Corrupted DT MIDI files From: Jack Campin Date: 15 Feb 08 - 12:57 PM I got it to play (using Quicktime Player on MacOS 9) but there were only 14 notes (enough for two lines) and it wasn't much of a tune - is it really that short? Like a cut-down version of "The Blacksmith" in the Penguin Book of English Folksongs. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Corrupted DT MIDI files From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 15 Feb 08 - 01:10 PM The problem at the mirror probably stems from the abc: % Generated more or less automatically by swtoabc by Erich Rickheit KSC X:1 T:Texas Rangers M:4/4 L:1/8 K:D A,A, DD CD E2| F21.333334/16 DC A, G, A,2 z2| This is the output of the sw2abc script converter that was floating around. (The give away is the fractional length values). The script was simple and couldn't convert all abc features properly. My own (programmatic) conversion appears to have been: X:1 % File Generated from SongWright TEXRANG by Mick Pearce T:Texas Rangers C:TRAD M:4/4 L:1/32 Q:1/4=90 K:D A,4A,4D4D4C4D4E8|(3F8D4C4A,4G,4A,8z8| generated from the Songwrite file: N-Texas Rangers C-TRAD A- T- S-90 K-D B-4/4 F- H- M-1A-8 A-8 D-8 D-8 C-8 D-8 E-4 F-6 D-8 C-8 A-8 @-8 A-4 R-4 L- which was distributed with the DT. The file looks as if it might be incomplete! Mick |
