Subject: Obit: John Brunious Jr. has died
From: GUEST,Mary Katherine

From Offbeat Magazine:

We just received the sad news that long-time Preservation Hall trumpeter and vocalistJohn Brunious, Jr. died last night of apparent natural causes, at his home in Florida, where he'd been residing since Hurricane Katrina, in which he not only lost everything, but spent time at the notorious New Orleans Convention Center. Brunious said : "We're not going to let a hurricane stop our music. This music is too important to the musicians and people of New Orleans, and to the people of the world. This music is our treasure and we want to share it." He was finally transported to Arkansas, and settled in Florida. Brunious is the son of jazz musician John Brunious, Sr. and father of trumpeter Wendell Brunious: another example of how New Orleans musical traditions and talent is passed from generation to generation here in the city. At press time, neither memorial nor funeral plans had been announced.

Thanks for posting this, MK. I heard thes news on my car radio on the way to work this morning. I hope that you and I are not the only ones hereabouts who know and care about John and the Brunious family.

All: In addition to the Offbeat Magazine website, you might consider staying tuned to your internet radio at www.wwoz.org for musical tributes and updated memorial/jazz-funeral plans.

Oh, I'm believing that lots of Mudcatters know about the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, if not the names and histories of the individual members. I just saw Wendell when I was there in December. Will send him a card.

I'm very pleased to see that the great New Orleans bandleader Don Vappie is aware of Mudcat, "lurks" here at least occasionally, and now has posted as a guest.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in town involved with this site ~ plus of course a small contingent of out-of-town "fans" of New Orleans like the esteemed Mary Katherine.

Born October 1940 ~ not yet 68 years old.

Not terribly young, but way too young to die.

When I first heard of the death of John Btunious I initially thought it was his son Wendell who I listened to in New Orleans playing with the son of Clarence Ford and Freddy Lonzo. I have excellent close up seperate photographs of the trio. In the past I spent a good deal of time in New Orleans and was fortunate to get to know many of the musicians including Raymond Bourque (Barrios), Manny Sales, Louis Nelson and Gerry Adams. I understand that Louis Armstrong played in a band of Gerry Adams mother. My back room contains photographs of Eddie Miller, Eubie Blake and Pete Fountains' father taken by Johnny Donnels who operated a photo studio on St. Peter Street. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any reference to John Btunious in my New Orleans jazz books.

John Jr was brother to Wendell, not son (although there has been some confusion about that, here and elsewhere).
