Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: sian, west wales Date: 14 Feb 08 - 05:25 AM OK - you could always refer to it by the Welsh: Yr Wyddgrug. Anyway, great place name, Tegeingl. Very, very old, referring to the tribe of the area from pre-Roman times. Nice bunch of people organizing it, too. Some of them are members of the group, Pen Tennyn; I hope they've saved themselves a spot during the festival as I'd like to hear them again. sian |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Mr Happy Date: 10 Jun 08 - 04:57 PM Les seems to be back in the full glow of health, judging by the colour of his face at Bromborough last weakend! Here's a recent offering from him to practice your Cymraig ready for Tegeingl. This is a partially autobiographical work: a cherdd Cymraeg..... CALON WAN Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus Aur y byd na'i berlau mân; ' Mhroblem ydy, yn anffodus, Os dw i'n onest, calon wan. Calon wan; dw i'n llawn tabledi Aspirin am byth, di-os; Mwy ohonyn medrech gredu Gyda'r dydd a gyda'r nos. Ni ddymunwn olud bydol, Caniateir dewis y bydd Ramipril a Bisoprodol, Cymerir bythol bob dydd. Calon wan; dw i'n llawn tabledi Aspirin am byth, di-os; Mwy ohonyn medrech gredu Gyda'r dydd a gyda'r nos. Glas y bore fel aderyn Esgyn poen ar draws y wawr; Pam rhoir imi warfarin, Peth sy'n lladd y llygod mawr?. Calon wan; dw i'n llawn tabledi Aspirin am byth, di-os; Mwy ohonyn medrech gredu Gyda'r dydd a gyda'r nos. |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Snuffy Date: 08 Aug 08 - 09:18 AM Mr H, I think Mo wanted a translation of Calon Wan, not of the website!!! |
|
Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Mr Happy Date: 08 Aug 08 - 12:04 PM Ok, 'Calon Wan' being a play on words 'Calon Lan' = pure heart. Its a kind've autobiographical epic, based on Les's recent ill health - heart attack. 'Calon Wan' = weak heart, & some've the references in the poem are of the various meds he's had or having to take, as in Calon wan; dw i'n llawn tabledi tablets Aspirin am byth, di-os; Mwy ohonyn medrech gredu Gyda'r dydd a gyda'r nos. Ni ddymunwn olud bydol, Caniateir dewis y bydd Ramipril a Bisoprodol, Cymerir bythol bob dydd. Perhaps one've our members who knows the welsh language more fluently could translate the rest? |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Aug 08 - 03:23 PM Well, his website has him booked every month except September, right up to March next year so I suspect he's not retiring yet. Probably just taking September off to recuperate. I'll let you know for certain if he gets back to me. LTS |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Aug 08 - 09:52 AM This from the mouth (via the computer) of Mr B himself today, copied here verbatim and whole.... "I'm having a couple of months off after Mold because that's when I'm having the heart surgery. I had no idea I was retiring. Les" So there we go. Rumour quashed, he is not retired, or retiring, merely on hold. As far as I can see, he intends to be at Mold. LTS |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: sian, west wales Date: 10 Aug 08 - 09:39 AM Well, he was in fine form when he called 'round at our stand at the Eisteddfod on Friday ... except he was wearing a bleedin' great winter coat on the only hot and fine day we had! He was off to another stand to stash it - told him he was making me break out in a sweat just looking at him! I won't go translating the whole song; it's a take-off on one of the best known Welsh hymns so you really need to have an idea of the original to get some of the jokes. So, here's the first verse of the original: Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus, Aur y byd neu'i berlau man; Gofyn wyf am galon hapus, calon onest, calon lan. I seek not life's ease and pleasures, Earthly riches, pearls, nor gold; Give to me a heart made happy, Clean and honest to unfold. Then Les': Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus Aur y byd na'i berlau mân; ' Mhroblem ydy, yn anffodus, Os dw i'n onest, calon wan. As above: I seek not life's ease and pleasures, Earthly riches, pearls, nor gold; plus My problem is, unfortunately, If I'm honest, a heart that's weak. So you can surmise the gist of the rest. sian |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: sian, west wales Date: 17 Aug 08 - 05:40 PM Yep, just got back this evening (pottered around N Wales before the trek home today). Enjoyed myself inside out and back-to-front. I'd do it again tomorrow. And the next day and the next. Friendly people, tremendous variety in the programme, tidy site. Got a bit ... ummm ... exciting in the Welsh poetry workshop; they'd left the back wall of the tent rolled up so, when that strong wind hit us, the tent worked a bit like a airfield windsock. I ended up grabbing a nearby anchor rope and wrestling my end of the marquee to Welsh soil. Very exciting. Les Barker was 100% hysterical - bilingually. He even ended up in the Welsh Stomp. This is an irreverant competitive gathering (very tongue-in-cheek) of some top Welsh (language) poets including several who have won the National Eisteddfod Chair ... and Les was right in their with his own Welsh poems. He came second in his 'heat' ... but only by a couple of votes! Brilliant! The rain didn't close in until Saturday night but sadly most of the crafty stands packed up before then - the wind was wicked so I can't blame them. (Call this _August_??????) Anyway, you missed a Really Good Event. Word is that they're doing it again next year. siân |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: sian, west wales Date: 18 Aug 08 - 05:06 AM Now - I'm not promising anything but ... I've tried to put some photos up on flickr , in a group called Gwyl Tegeingl Mold 2008. Hopefully the festival guys will put a lot more up - there seemed to be a number of 'official' photographers there! siân |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: GUEST,Will - Guest Date: 18 Aug 08 - 04:45 PM Me and my beloved attended - first time ( in nine years!) we've spent time away from home without the kids. An excellent little festival that hit the ground running on Friday and didn't let up until the early hours of Sunday. A superb line up in all concerts and no shortage of things to do! Personal favourites were Martha Tilston, Fernhill and Crasdant. Les Barker and Jez Lowe also played to their usual excellent standards. It was nice to get to play in the bar like grown-ups do and we even took a welsh language taster on board. I can see this becoming a well attended little festival with a unique little flavour of it's own. I can't recommend it highly enough. Congratulations and a big thank you to the organisers - and all the volunteers, stewards etc from the rugby club. Touch wood the next one won't coincide with my holiday either -I certainly intend returning - without the sprogs. |

Subject: RE: Mold UK - Festival in Aug - Les Barker From: Mr Happy Date: 15 Feb 14 - 05:42 PM Mo, Here ye go, better late than never! WEAK HEART I do not ask luxurious life The world's gold or its fine pearls; 'Problem is, unfortunately, If I'm honest, weak heart. Heart weak for I am full of pills Aspirin forever, unquestionable; More of which you could believe With day and evening. We do not want worldly riches, The choice will be allowed Ramipril and Bisoprodol, Timeless taken daily. Heart weak for I am full of pills Aspirin forever, unquestionable; More of which you could believe With day and evening. Blue morning like a bird Ascend pain across the dawn; Why is warfarin given me, The thing that kills rats?. Heart weak for I am full of pills Aspirin forever, unquestionable; More of which you could believe With day and evening. |
