Subject: RE: Tech: need entry level mandolin From: mandotim Date: 12 Feb 08 - 10:11 AM Health Warning; when Mandolin Acquisition Syndrome sets in, your bank balance may never recover! Seriously; what sort of music do you want to play? there are lots of sorts of mandolin, some well suited for one purpose but not for others. With mandolins, 'entry level' can mean anything from £35 off ebay to several hundred pounds for a playable bluegrass instrument. Let's have a bit more info (and maybe a budget), and I'm sure the mandolin junkies on the board will chime in to help (I include myself as a member of that select group, with about 15 mandolins at the last count!) Tim PS 'offshore' from where? |

Subject: RE: Tech: need entry level mandolin From: DonMeixner Date: 12 Feb 08 - 10:20 AM Hi Tim, Jammy is a friend of mine. He is looking for an earthy sounding mando like a nice "A" but and "F" would be OK. Price is in the $400.00 to $750.00 range. Off shore over here in New York State usually means Pacific Rim when talkinging instruments. And it means anywhere but here for most other things. Don |

You could get a mid-level A or an entry F for that price. Keep an eye on ebay and the classifieds at the mandolin cafe here Tim |

Subject: RE: Tech: need entry level mandolin From: Les in Chorlton Date: 13 Feb 08 - 09:25 AM I think a good bet is to leave credit cards, cheque books and cash at home and go to a shop with lots of mandolins. Play lots of them and you will know which one you want. You may have to go a few times when it is quiet. When sure buy the best you can afford or the best you cannot really afford. Best of luck. |
