Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Curate and the Vicar From: The Doctor Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:09 AM A group from Kent called The Crayfolk, which included Peter 'Slats' Hicks, sang it and I have a recording. Their version was as follows: The vicar at the church one day said to his curate John, 'I bet I've had more girls than you', and the curate said, 'You're on. We'll stand at the door of the church one day and this will be our sign. You ding-a-ding for the girls you've had and I'll ding-a-dong for mine.' Ding-ding, ding-ding. There were more ding-a-dings than there were ding-dongs Till this little lady came along And the curate went 'Ding-dong'. 'I say,' said the vicar, 'there's a mistake here. That's my wife I do declare.' 'Oh,' said the curate,'I've been there. Ring-a-ding-a-ding-ding-dong.' It's also currently sung by Keepers Fold, in a slightly different version, and if I can lay my hands on it I'll post it too. |

Subject: LYR ADD: Curate and the Vicar From: Newport Boy Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:20 AM THE CURATE AND THE VICAR (Trad, arr. Yetties) There once was a country vicar who said to his curate John I bet I've had more women than you, and the curate said, you're on. Tomorrow outside the church we'll stand, and this shall be the sign, You ding-a-ding for the women you've had and I'll ding-a-dong for mine, for mine, And I'll ding-a-dong for mine. There were more ding-a-dings than ding-a-dong dongs when a pretty young maid walked by And the curate went ding dong! Ah, said the vicar, don't ding-a-dong there, that's my wife, I do declare. Well, said the curate, I don't care, with a ding-a-ding-a-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, With a ding-a-ding-a-ding, ding dong. From "Out in the Green Fields" by The Yetties Copyright Maypole Music. Published Wise Publications, 1974 PJH The front page of the book states "All songs: Trad/Arr Yetties unless otherwise credited", and this has no other note. I've heard this sung elsewhere, but I think all versions came from this one. Phil |
