Subject: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbid users? From: ragdall Date: 02 Feb 08 - 10:45 PM Because Netscape was bought by AOL and dumped, I've had to find another browser and email application. The Firefox browser seems to be a reasonable substitute for Netscape. However I haven't been able to figure out how to configure the Thunderbird email to show the total number of files in each folder, as Netscape did. Does anyone here know how to do that? I'm not explaining this very well. Here are screen shots to show what I mean: Netscape Thunderbird I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks, rags |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbid users? From: katlaughing Date: 02 Feb 08 - 11:50 PM Hmmm..I don't recall ever seeing that in Thunderbird. Sorry I can't be of any help. I just downloaded the latest version of it in a new PC and cannot get a "sent" file to show anything at all. I've never had that happen before. I've use Tbird for years and been happy with it, overall. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbid users? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Feb 08 - 11:51 PM Not quite sure what the problem is? Even with the photos. You want to know how many messages are in each folder, or are you talking about sub folders of some sort? It looks in the Thunderbird photo that you haven't clicked all of the possible expand/contract arrows to open the directory. (I use Thunderbird and Eudora and Pegasus. I also used to use and love the Netscape mail, but I had to give up on that a long time ago when Earthlink insisted on a secure setting that the Netscape mail couldn't negotiate.) SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbid users? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 03 Feb 08 - 12:02 AM the only way I'm aware of is opening each folder then reading the numbers on bottom right (Unread & Total). sandra |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbid users? From: ragdall Date: 03 Feb 08 - 03:05 AM Thank you all for your replies. katlaughing, if you mean that the sent mail doesn't go to the sent folder, there's an option for that somewhere on the tools menu. SRS, In the Netscape example it shows the total number of files in each folder. Thunderbird will only give a number for unread files in a folder. There are no other possible expand/contract arrows to open the directory, that I can see. sandra, I tried opening a folder but do not see any numbers on bottom right. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: katlaughing Date: 03 Feb 08 - 03:48 AM Good, that's great! No, what I meant was I have no sent folder. Nowhere that my sent files go to, where I can see what I've actually sent. I've looked through the various options, etc. and for the life of me, cannot see why there isn't one.:-) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: Newport Boy Date: 03 Feb 08 - 05:57 AM Kat - go to Tools - Account Settings, then for each account click Copies & Folders. Tick "Place a copy in.." and tick Sent folder. Should work Phil |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: Ian Burdon Date: 03 Feb 08 - 07:41 AM Netscape lives on in SeaMonkey from Mozilla (which shares a lot of code with Firefox and Thunderbird). On the whole I prefer Firefox and Thunderbird but SeaMonkey is worth a look Ian |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: ragdall Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:25 AM Ian, Thank you for the information about SeaMonkey. I downloaded it. It does look much like Netscape. I'm going to try to stay with Firefox/ Thunderbird, now that it's all configured. I'll keep SeaMonkey as a backup browser. My Netscape won't load images on Flickr so I can't use it anymore. rags |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: katlaughing Date: 03 Feb 08 - 11:12 AM NB, thanks, but I have already done that. I have the box ticked which instructs it to put all Sent files in the Sent folder in Local Folders. The thing is the SENT folder does not show up anywhere. Over on the left where all of the Local Folders show up, I have Inbox, Unsent, Drafts, Junk, & Deleted. Nothing I do seems to bring it about.:-) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: Newport Boy Date: 03 Feb 08 - 04:39 PM Kat - I can't recreate your problem, so can only offer a bit of my (limited) knowledge of Thunderbird profiles. I've done a lot of adjustments on mine, and relocated the profile (where mail is stored) on another partition. There are a number of articles on the Mozilla knowledge base, but I can't find anything directly relevant. Before you try any changes suggested below, close Thunderbird and backup your profile (instructions at Mozilla). Use Explorer to look at the mail files. These are in the profile which will probably be at C:\Documents and Settings\{User}\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\{random name}.default. This should contain a Mail\LocalFolders folder. You should see all your mail folders (as the left pane). Check that this contains a file "Sent" (no extension). If this exists, it should contain your sent messages - you can examine it with Notepad. There will probably also be a "Sent.msf" file, which is an index file. If these files are corrupted, some mail may not be visible. msf files can be deleted - they will be recreated when Thunderbird restarts. If the "Sent" file isn't there, try creating a new empty file in Notepad and naming it "Sent", saving it in the ...\Local Folders. I think, but don't know, that Thunderbird should recognise this on restart. It's quite possible that I'm barking up the wrong tree, but it's the best I can offer. Phil |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: ragdall Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:04 PM kat, Which version do you have? I have 2.0.0.9. I wonder if you could download the program again and reinstall it? It might take care of the problem? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: katlaughing Date: 03 Feb 08 - 10:43 PM Something is messed up...it's not letting me send messages. I'll go look around in my old PC, tomorrow and see what is different, then get back to you all. Thank you, very much! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mozilla Thunderbird users? From: LeTenebreux Date: 04 Feb 08 - 03:53 PM I use Thunderbird. For an all-in-one browser/mail client, try Seamonkey. I think it branched off from Netscape 5. |
