Subject: Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records, KPFA From: open mike Date: 28 Jan 08 - 02:44 AM I have heard that there is a documentary in the planning stages which focusses on Chris Strachwitz, founder of Arhoolie Records, and d.j. from KPFA, Pacifica Radio. see: www.arhoolie.com and http://www.arhoolie.com/history/index.html and http://www.nea.gov/honors/heritage/Heritage00/Strachwitz.html and http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/13/CMK8TOSI5.DTL and http://www.globalvillageidiot.net/strachwitz.html and http://mixonline.com/recording/interviews/audio_arhoolie_records_chris/ If anyone has any interesting stories or pictures that might be of interest to a project archiving Chris's life, love and support of acoustic and traditional music and influence on the music world, post to this thread and i will direct the film makers here to see any comments. |

Subject: RE: Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records, KPFA From: open mike Date: 28 Jan 08 - 04:15 AM I recently watched the film Chulas Fronteras, a documentary chronicalling Tex-Mex music by Chris Strachwitz and Les Blank . Ry Coder was inspired by Chris when he went on to play and record with Flaco Jimenez. http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/review?oid=oid%3A161538 |

Subject: RE: Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records, KPFA From: Tweed Date: 29 Jan 08 - 06:33 AM Clifton Chenier footage? I got the Arhoolie dvd "King of Zydeco" and there's some powerful stuff on there but not much telling how the King and Chris got hooked up. Also, if they got Mance Lipscomb or Lightning Hopkins footage? Chris Strachwitz is King of All Things Vernacular and probably anything that they come up with for a film will be a good thing. His work is very important, but he never got the press that Lomax did, and I think he is a much more honorable sort of man than Lomax was in his dealings with the artists that he found playing picnics, jukes, dancehalls and so on. Brave bastard too, to be a white guy running around rural Mississippi recording sharecroppers in the very early 1960's! Tweed |

Subject: RE: Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records, KPFA From: M.Ted Date: 29 Jan 08 - 12:21 PM I am a big Chris Strachwitz/Les Blank fan--When I lived in Berkeley, one of the best things was listening to Chris' show, another was going to the opening of Les' films at the PFA--and then there was Down Home Music--for those who don't believe that there is living traditional and folk music, they offer the proof. The best thing is that there has never been a superimposed political agenda, The music and cultures always have an implicit message, though, which they've never shied away from--which is a pretty clever balancing act-- |
