PepsiCo has scheduled a pre-game ad for the Super Bowl that they apparently believe will require explanation - for some:

Only deaf people will get this Super Bowl ad

PepsiCo's 60 seconds of utter silence will stump the hearing-abled
The Associated Press
updated 12:29 p.m. CT, Thurs., Jan. 24, 2008

NEW YORK - Amid the wall-to-wall sound during next Sunday's Super Bowl, one commercial from PepsiCo could send some viewers grabbing for their remotes to check whether they'd accidentally hit the mute button.

The pre-game advertisement features a joke that originates from the deaf community and will play out on screen over 60 seconds of total silence, a veritable eternity when it comes to the noisiness of Super Bowl ads.

"It's a popular story and we just turned it into an advertisement," said Clay Broussard, a supply and logistics manager at PepsiCo who proposed the idea for the ad. "This is the PepsiCo flavor of that joke."

The joke goes like this: Two guys are driving to their friend Bob's house to watch the Super Bowl. Once they get to Bob's street, neither knows which house is his. They sit in the car, arguing, until one of them has an idea. He starts laying on the horn, and one by one, the houses light up and dogs start barking.

One house stays dark and quiet: It's Bob's.

Deaf people will be falling out of their chairs in disbelief, National Association of the Deaf president Bobbie Beth Scoggins wrote in an e-mail response to questions. Hearing people, Scoggins wrote, will stop what they're doing to see why there are no sounds. She believes it's an historic first for an ad featuring American Sign Language to get such prominent play.

Most of "U.S." have thought British humo(u)r sometimes needs an explanation - so I guess it's good to see another "different culture" that's right among us get some air time.

Any thoughts about other cultural segments who might want equal time?

We might even have a couple of 'catter's whose jokes we understand, that might not be appreciated beyond our own little group? Maybe we could make them (in)famous for the whole world.

John

Sure we could -- if we could get a dramatization of the Reg brothers and Spaw onto the tube for the Super-bowl. The script is no problem, but the funding!! Oy!!

Like puns -- never apologize, never explain.

You can't explain a joke (and have it be funny). It either flies or it doesn't. Finis.

OH, I don't know. People tell my kids sex jokes, and when I explain the concept (ha ha), they laugh... Maybe it's only adults who shouldn't get explanations?

Well what the hell. If it raises awareness of hearing people to the deaf in their community, then I say go for it and good on them!

Bit like the Two Ronnies sketch where one of them says it's his life's ambition to form a nude ladies choir to bring music to millions and pleasure to the deaf.

LTS -

So are you suggesting that PepsiCo could have used an even better joke?

Of course, it may just backfire... there's been an ad on UK TV recently where the information is written on placards and shown to camera. There is no soundtrack and you actually have to watch the screen.

I just find myself thinking 'ah, peace' or wandering off to make tea as I'm sure many others do.

Superbowl fanatics don't leave the sofa in front of the TV for anything. That's why there are spouses and kids to bring stuff to them.

(Note: the addicts are NOT ALWAYS of a single sex, but there's nearly always someone invited who doesn't quite have the enthusiasm of the rest of the ....)

I'd better pop in my cola joke, and cos LTS might like it for some obscure reason.

The Pepsi- and Coca-cala corps finally decide to merge. They put the advertising people onto getting a slogan for the new company.

They come up with "Be sociable. Have a Poke."
