Boy, I didn't find out much. Apparently, the title is "Jimmy Had a Nickel," and it was on the "Lil' Rascals" show and recorded by Clarence Williams and by Eddie Cantor in the 1930's, on his Chase & Sanborn radio show - sound sample here (click).

JIMMY HAD A NICKEL
Al Goodhart, Al Hoffman, Maurice Sigler

1. Jimmy had a nickel,
Didn't have it long,
He didn't have it long,
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

2. Jimmy tried to hide it
But that would never do.
That would never do,
'Cause the kids all knew that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

[bridge] Down the street his eager feet
Found their way to the candy store.
When he got there, holy gee,
He never knew he had so many friends before.

3. Jimmy had a sweetheart.
She was waiting too,
And now the kids are blue,
'Cause the kids found out....

(that's all I got from the recording fragments)

Tune is a variation of the "neener-neener-neener" playground chant.

On Williams' version singer was Dick Robertson. Maurice Sigler wrote this song.

Some additional information to this song says that "While never a chart hit, this song was nevertheless performed variously by Eddie Cantor, Abe Lyman & His Orchestra, and Clarence Williams & His Orchestra. The version in this film is sung by The Two Darling Sisters, with piano accompaniment by Marvin Hatley". Source : theluckycorner.com

Al Goodhart was co-writer of this tune.

The last part of the song (see the lyrics posted by Joe Offer above), simply go:

"...cause all the kids found out that
Jimmy had a sweetheart, jimmy had a sweetheart, jimmy had a sweetheart...."

That's pretty much how it ends. =)

Complete lyrics (Darling Sisters version)

Jimmy had a nickel,
He didn't have it long,
He didn't have it long,
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

Jimmy tried to hide it
But that would never do.
That would never do,
'Cause the kids all knew that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

Down the street his eager feet
Found their way to the candy store.
When he got there, holy gee,
He never knew he had so many friends before.

Jimmy had a sweetheart.
She was waiting too,
And now the kids are blue,
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a sweetheart
Jimmy had a sweetheart
Jimmy had a sweetheart too!

I've got the Little Rascals set with all 80 shows on it. That song DEFINITELY sticks in my mind. My 6 YO daughter has been running around singing it!

Those quotes from Spanky and Scotty are the best!

The recording by Clarence Williams and His Orchestra from 1934 has yet a 4th verse. Unfortunately, I was unable to understand all of it:

4. Jimmy had a pocket.
The pocket had a hole,
Pocket had a hole,
And the ... [unintelligible].
Jimmy lost his nickel.
Jimmy lost his nickel.
Jimmy lost his sweetheart, too.

We had this on a player piano roll as a kid....one of my favorite songs...

Verse after guest above...

Jimmy wanted cookies..his sweetheart wanted pie....
Sweetheart wanted pie
Cause Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel
Jimmy had a nickel
Jimmy had a nickel

Jimmy had a pocket
His pocket had a hole
Pocket had a hole
And the kids all knew that
Jimmy lost his nickel
Jimmy lost his nickel
Jimmy lost his sweetheart too!

Her's a Youtube video of the Little Rascals doing this.

nickel

Thoughts:

My goodness, those kids are so young, esp. the girl on the left.
Those dresses are way too short.
I love the way the littler girl handles "Jimmy had a sweetheart." Real talent there.

From the sheet music at Google Books. However, the last page is missing from the "preview," (I suppose you could see it if you were willing to pay $3.03.), but I have filled in missing words from the Wendell Hall recording; I have put them in italics.

JIMMY HAD A NICKEL
Words and music by Maurice Sigler, Al Goodhart, and Al Hoffman, ©1933.

1. Little Jimmy Jenkins had an uncle and the uncle came to little Jimmy Jenkins' house one day.
He gave little Jim a nickel, told him not to spend the nickel, but to save it for a rainy day.
Jimmy left the house in all his glory.
What happened after that's another story.

CHORUS: Jimmy had a nickel.
He didn't have it long,
Didn't have it long,
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy tried to hide it
But that would never do.
That would never do
'Cause the kids all knew that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Down the street his eager feet
Found their way to the candy store.
When he got there, holy gee!
He never knew he had so many friends before.
Jimmy had a sweetheart.
She was waitin' too.
Now the kids are blue
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a sweetheart.
Jimmy had a sweetheart.
Jimmy had a nickel, too.

It wasn't a dollar; that didn't rhyme.
It wasn't a quarter; it wasn't a dime.
It was just a [unintelligible].

2. Jimmy took his nickel and he said he'd buy a pickle but the lad was very fickle and he said:
"I will buy a lollipop and then I'll buy a choc'late drop and put three pennies in my bank instead."
Little Jimmy's life was hunky-dory
But there's another chapter to this story.

CHORUS 2: Jimmy had a nickel.
He didn't have it long,
Didn't have it long
'Cause his girl found out that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy wanted candy.
His sweetheart wanted pie,
But he didn't buy
'Cause he don't like pie,
So Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Then his sweetheart changed her mind
And they went to a movie show
When he got there, holy gee!
He couldn't get a ticket 'cause he lost his dough.
Jimmy had a pocket.
The pocket hat a hole,
Pocket had a hole,
And the story's true 'cause
Jimmy lost his nickel.
Jimmy lost his nickel.
Jimmy lost his sweetheart, too.

The Internet Archive has recordings by
Wendell Hall, 1933.
Joe Venuti and His Orchestra, 1934.
Todd Rollins and His Orchestra, with vocal chorus by Chick Bullock, 1934.

I think the last two are actually the same recording and one of them is a pseudonym.

I believe the "[unintelligible]" is "It was just a 'Jef" - as in Thomas Jefferson
