Subject: ADD: As With Gladness Men of Old From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 08 - 08:30 PM For the record, here are the lyrics, from cyberhymnal.org: AS WITH GLADNESS, MEN OF OLD Words: William C. Dix, 1860. He wrote this hymn on the day of the Epiphany, while sick in bed; it was first published in his Hymns of Love and Joy. Music: Dix, Konrad Kocher, Stimmen aus dem Reiche Gottes, 1838 As with gladness, men of old Did the guiding star behold As with joy they hailed its light Leading onward, beaming bright So, most glorious Lord, may we Evermore be led to Thee. As with joyful steps they sped To that lowly manger bed There to bend the knee before Him Whom Heaven and earth adore; So may we with willing feet Ever seek Thy mercy seat. As they offered gifts most rare At that manger rude and bare; So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin's alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heavenly King. Holy Jesus, every day Keep us in the narrow way; And, when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide, Where no clouds Thy glory hide. In the heavenly country bright, Need they no created light; Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown, Thou its Sun which goes not down; There forever may we sing Alleluias to our King! |

Subject: ADD: All Poor Men and Humble From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 08 - 08:53 PM Trinity-St. Paul's United Church in Toronto has gender-neutral lyrics for "All Poor Men and Humble": All Poor Ones and Humble (Katharine E. Roberts (1877-1962) and W.T. Pennar Davies) 1. All poor ones and humble and all those who stumble, come hastening, and feel not afraid; for Jesus, our treasure, with love past all measure, in lowly poor manger was laid. Though wise men who found him laid rich gifts around him, yet oxen they gave him their hay, and Jesus in beauty accepted their duty; contented in manger he lay. Refrain: Then haste we to show him the praises we owe him; our service he ne'er can despise; whose love still is able to show us that stable, where softly in manger he lies. 2. The Christ Child will lead us, the Good Shepherd feed us and with us abide till his day. Then hatred he'll banish; then sorrow will vanish, and death and despair flee away. And he shall reign ever, and nothing shall sever from us the great love of our King; his peace and his pity shall bless his fair city; his praises we ever shall sing. And just a little different, from Lake Grove Presbyterian: All poor men and humble, all lame men who stumble, come, haste ye, nor feel ye afraid: for Jesus, our treasure, with love past all measure, to lowly poor manger was laid. The wise men who found him laid rich gifts around him, yet oxen they gave him their hay. And Jesus in beauty accepted their duty; contented in manger he lay. Then haste we to show him our praises we owe him; our service he ne'er can despise, whose love still is able to show us that stable, where softly in manger he lies The words of this carol are adapted from the traditional Welsh ("O deued pob Cristion"), and are copyright © Katharine E. Roberts (1877-1962) and W.T. Pennar Davies. This page (click) says the song is in the New Oxford Book of Carols, but I don't have that edition. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: As with gladness From: GUEST,catlin Date: 02 Jan 08 - 10:04 PM Thanks for the chords to As With Gladness! Are there any available for All Poor Men? I always thought All Poor Men was a William Billings tune. I guess I was wrong! |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: As with gladness/All Poor Men From: GUEST,catlin Date: 03 Jan 08 - 05:30 AM By-the by, I never liked the new and improved, politically correct hymns. My femininity has never been that much at stake to worry about "God the Father" or "The Brotherhood of Man." That's just how people used to write. And, hey, as a quasi-historical re-enactor I'm quite able to accept this. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: As with gladness/All Poor Men From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Jan 08 - 11:48 AM For another take on the chords to 'As with Gladness,' get out your Rise Up Singing and look up 'For the Beauty of the Earth.' In my copy it's on page 153. In my church, these two songs use the same tune, which is known as Dix. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: As with gladness/All Poor Men From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Jan 08 - 01:53 PM The blue clicky didn't work for me. Just in case that's the same for others, this is the URL for the Tuno-o-tron: http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html That second tune is unusual, having half notes in the middle of the measure like that. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: As with gladness/All Poor Men From: sian, west wales Date: 03 Jan 08 - 06:34 PM I'm no big fan of Politically-correcting hymns, carols, etc either. I've been caught out a couple of times this Christmas. (mutter, mutter: ya leaves home for a decade or two and they go and mess with yer favourite hymns ... sheesh). Re: All Poor Men and Humble, all they had to do is go back to the original Welsh. It's, "O come all Christians, now, to Bethlehem to see how gentle is God". Nicely de-sexed. The original Welsh words are by Jane Ellis (circa 1840) and the version currently used was somewhat adapted in 1921. The tune is a traditional Welsh plygain carol tune. sian |
