Subject: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST,Jake Date: 23 Dec 07 - 12:01 AM I just got Rick Spencer's new CD, Waiting For Me, hot off the press. I get his newsletter, so I knew it was in the works, and there was something about the way he talked about working on it that made me suspect it was going to be special. Well, it blew me away. This is all Spencer and all original songs, brilliantly played, by Rick, on guitar, mandolin, bass, English concertina, and dulcimer, with themes ranging from roads we all travel -- honor, love, quests - to history we didn't know -- I didn't know -- to rich New England landscapes -- and, to the sea. I can't say I have a favorite song because just when I think, "Yes! This is the one," the next one grabs me. It's like having a buffet of your favorite foods and an endless appetite. Spencer even did the cover art -- a vibrant abstract painting that is as rich as the songs within. It's clear he's doing what most of us only hope to do: go beyond what we've ever done before. If you go to his Catfeather website, http://www.catfeather.com/listening_room.htm you can hear some of the cuts, and you can read Spencer's poetic lyrics. Happy Holidays everyone! |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Dec 07 - 10:15 AM Thanks for posting this notice and the link. I'm always interested in what Spencer has to sing, and what he has to say about the songs. I look forward to getting a copy of this CD. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST,Jake Date: 24 Dec 07 - 10:49 AM Interesting. The song that's staying with me the last two days is 'Letter From New York'. But that's the way it is with Spencer's music, individual songs rise in the mind when you most need them. I guess it's that they are so genuine, and human, that we can see our own reflection in them. I believe what I've read about poetry - that it is only poetry when it reaches outside itself - and this is what makes Spencer's music so unique. I wonder what song will mirror my days as we get closer to the new year. |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST,Rick Date: 25 Dec 07 - 12:21 PM Hello All, Many thanks to you for the kind words. Just a clarification to offer. Thanks to the amazing folks at Front Porch (who did the duplication) the recording arrived quite a bit earlier than expected. I still have some work to do on the website (www.catfeather.com) to get things coordinated. The liner notes and lyrics are there on the "listening room" page, but those selections that are available to lisen to and download are not the versions to be found on the new recording. Rather, they're "quick and dirty" versions that were posted some time ago. I hope that before long there will be a page dedicated to the "Waiting for Me" recording, which will include sample selections from the new disc. All the best to ye mudcatters for the New Year. rs |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST Date: 26 Dec 07 - 10:15 AM This is a very cool CD with all the musical complexions that Rick Spencer has always brought to his original works. This recording demonstrates great knowledge and understanding of musical instruments. Sin Killer seems to be sticking in my head at the moment. I have heard that since he left Mystic Seaport he teaches guitar, banjo, mandolin and concertina. |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: Celtaddict Date: 26 Dec 07 - 12:02 PM Yes, Jake (I am guessing that is you at 10:15; why don't you consider joining us (free) and getting a cookie so we can know you?), and, renaissance man that Rick is, he is now curator of a set of historic houses, producing special programs for them, and painting with exhibits regionally. I haven't gotten mine yet only because I want to get it from him personally and have it signed; chance will come at Stonington house concert in February. |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST Date: 26 Dec 07 - 01:36 PM I believe that the Stonington concert in February is Rick Spencer and David Littlefield. |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: Celtaddict Date: 26 Dec 07 - 02:14 PM From Rick's newsletter: The first of what may be several CD release gatherings will take place on Thursday, January 3rd, '08 at the Butler-McCook House, 396 Main Street in Hartford, CT as part of the ongoing First Thursday series. Admission is free. The house will be open for tours and I'll be performing music from the new CD (and perhaps an "oldie" or two) between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. This will be a great time to pick up a copy of the new disc. Visit www.ctlandmarks.org for directions. The house concert that I'm doing with Dave Littlefield, which was originally scheduled for February 3rd has been rescheduled for Sunday February 24, 2008. It turns out that 2/3/08 is Super Bowl Sunday and we just didn't want to deal with the competition. This event is part of the series of house concerts that are produced by Mr. Jonathan Parsons. The concert generally begins at 4pm, usually costs $10.00 per person and always includes a great meal prepared by hosts Lisa and Tom. Dave and I are planning to present some new material, including several songs from my new CD. For reservations (quite necessary for this one we think) and directions please call 860.434.2047 |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST,Jake Date: 28 Dec 07 - 12:44 AM No, Celtaddict, the 10:15 'Guest' wasn't me. I did attempt to register, but, for some reason, it didn't take. I'll try again another time. Thanks for the invitation. I'm glad Spencer posted about the cuts on catfeather being the raw-er versions, because you really can't compare them with the fine CD recording, and listening in bits just doesn't let you get in the same room with the musician, you know? |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: GUEST,Mary Date: 28 Dec 07 - 09:48 AM My copy of Rick Spencer's new CD, "Waiting For Me", arrived a week ago. Since then, I have played it over and over and over again. What a fabulous CD! The lyrics and the music not only touch your heart, they touch your soul. Once again Rick Spencer treats us to his talents as a gifted musician and shares with us his magic touch of bringing New England and the sea to life. |

Subject: RE: Review: Rick Spencer's 'Waiting For Me' From: Rich_Kelly Date: 28 Dec 07 - 12:33 PM I also have snatched of copy of Rick's new CD. As one would expect, the CD is loaded with gems. Rick has contributed a lot of the traditional music scene in New England for years, but this CD contains all original material, smartly arranged and performed by Rick. My personal favorite at the moment is "Too Young". Fun stuff. |
