Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: MargoMcP Date: 19 Dec 07 - 08:49 PM Frank Sinatra and occasionally Bing Crosby, from my "youth". I love those j-i-n-g-l-e bells, those holiday j-i-n-g-l-e bells and being home for Christmas, if only in my dreams. As a child in mid-50's I hated those "new" songs, "Frosty the Snowman" and "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer." I always liked the older church or "adult" songs, never children's songs, no matter who sang them but especially if Burl Ives sang them; still can't stand him! Some adults just felt condescending to me and he was one of them for some reason. |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: Jack Blandiver Date: 20 Dec 07 - 04:58 AM By this point I've had enough, so away with 'The Holly Bears the Crown' and 'Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man' (fine albums both) as I reach for suitable alternatives to get me through to the other side. Here's but three: 1) No Xmas for John Quays by The Fall - for pure Sentiment the '78 Peel Session version / for raw ritual power that on Totale's Turns. 2) Eddie Waring by Help Yourself - which appears on 'Christmas at the Patti'; 14-minutes of pure drone indulgence. 3) New Dawn Fades by Joy Division - from Unknown Pleasures, of course. My association with Christmas & Joy Division goes back to an arduous day of Xmas shopping in Durham in 1993, my find frazzled by the usual festive muzak fare being played in all the shops; all except for Oddbins where they were playing Joy Division. It was like walking into heaven... |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 20 Dec 07 - 01:46 PM Oddly enough, a World War II era song keeps resonating, "I'll Be Home For Christmas." For those of us old enough to remember having Fathers, Brothers, Uncles or friends deployed overseas and in harm's way during that war, or Korea, or Viet Nam or now, it is one of the most melancholy, yet hopeful songs I can recall. "Let it Snow" is another I like, though it has been done to death recently in films such as "Die Hard." For traditional carols, I like "O Holy Night" and the "Coventry Carol," among others. |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 20 Dec 07 - 06:07 PM By the way, for those who have personally known want or are sensitive to those in need, as I am sure most are, Merle Haggard did a song some time ago called "If We Make It To (Through?) December." I grew up around a lot of Dust Bowl families who made it to California in the 1930's and '40's. Too many kids and never enough money. This song sounds like it could have described any of them. Any kind of Christmas was pretty special to them. I think of those folks every time my family gets together for the holidays. |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: PeadarOfPortsmouth Date: 21 Dec 07 - 09:44 AM It's not Christmas until I hear The Kingston Trio's "Last Month of the Year". Great album. My dad would play it each year when I was a kid and one of my favorite Christmas memories is tied to the song "Goodnight My Baby". (Maybe that could be another thread...songs that remind you of special holiday moments?) Anyway, my dad was absolutely thrilled when I was able to track it down as a CD last year and gave it to him for Christmas...he could finally retire the vinyl. Happy co-opted solistice, everybody! Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Dec 07 - 01:40 PM I hate myself for saying this, but the first song that comes to mind is "Silver Bells." I don't even like the song that much, but something about it apparently strikes a chord in me. I think it's kind of a Christmas earworm. The song keeps going through my head, all Christmas long, and I can't forget it's Christmas, even if I want to!!! Humbug. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: GUEST,Mike in DC Date: 21 Dec 07 - 08:08 PM I happened to hear Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas the other day, followed shortly by White Christmas. The two songs are quite similar - somewhat sentimental, written about the same time (1943 and 1942, respectively) for movies (Meet Me in St. Louis and Holiday Inn)and performed by very popular singers (Judy Garland and Bing Crosby). I've heard them all my life. I've always liked Have Yourself, never felt much one way or the other about White. But hearing them in close proximity really accentuated their differences for me. If I hadn't been in a public place, with no control over the sound system, I would have turned White Christmas off in mid chorus. Crosby sounded painfully lugubrious compared to Garland, then at the height of her powers. Anyone else have a similar reaction? Or perhaps a completely opposite one? |

Subject: RE: What songs make you feel 'Christmassy'? From: number 6 Date: 21 Dec 07 - 08:25 PM The Mole Catcher's Apprentice .... I love your handle! now ... back on track with the subject of this thread. Every December back in the years of my formidable teenage youth, the Beatles always launched a new Album, with much fanfare. I've never really been a fan of the 4 mop tops, but when ever I hear "Dear Prudence", or "Savoy Truffle" my mind can't help but drift off to a very, very special Christmas (1968). To me those 2 songs can be classified as 2 of my favourite Christmassy songs. biLL |

From: Padre Date: 22 Dec 07 - 04:55 PM Besides the obvious carols: In the Bleak Midwinter , one song (actually tune, because it has no words) that somehow reminds me of Christmas is 'Telstar' - by the Tornados. It hit #1 just before Christmas in 1962, and I was at a down time - the melody seemed to help me feel better. Padre |
