I guessthose that vistit who don't come to the Annexe read here...

Pipex have suspended our account, leaving us without broadband access. As a result, folkinfo is down. I am not sure as yet whether I will be using dial up to upload a few Mb of data to provide at least basic services or whether to wait until broadband is restored. The Annexe is unnafected by this down time.

I'll try to explain how we have ended up being suspended. Earlier this year, we recieved a new bank card with a new expiry date. We tried to enter this new information into our Pipex account but the changes did not go through. We contacted Pipex by telephone and were assured the matter was resolved.

We believed everything was in order until earlier this month we recieved an email (opening despite our previous communication... though there waa none except our phone call mentioned above and about a discussion about direct debit payment - a subject that has never been raised) informing us we needed to contact them or we would be cut off in 10 days.

We investigated the previous problem and found that despite our previous conversation, the new expiry date did not show on our Pipex account. We contacted Pipex who put the new details in and they again assured us everything was in order.

This time we did check the account details a couple of days later and found the changes had taken. We believed everything in order until we had a phone call from Pipex earlier this week. This time they said the card details were wrong. We confirmed the card details and Pipex tried to take the payment manually. We were told the payment was not authorised by the bank.

At this point, we contacted our bank to ask what the problem was (it certainly wasn't lack of money in the account). They informed us that the reason for the Pipex manual attempts failing were that they were entering an issue number of zero.

We then got back to Pipex and a different person attempted to make the payment manually and we were told yet again that everything was in order...

This evening I have found we have been cut off. We have since checked the bank accont and found that the manual payment we were told had been made, had not. I realise now we should have checked the bank after the phone call but we didn't.

At the moment, I feel as if we are in some sort of twilight zone thing in our dealings with Pipex. It seems incredible...

In the meanwhile I can only apologise for the down time. We do try our best but no planning can really cater for making ones best efforts to ensure payments are made, being assured by the company that everything is fine to find out later it's not... or for that matter, as also happened with another co we used (web hosting this time) that the company does an overnight flit but when things go wrong, that seems to be the sort of way it goes for us.

Jon

Sorry to hear about this Jon. I hope you get it all sorted out quickly, but it really did take an astronomical amount of incompetence on their part.

Sincere commiserations - the only thing worse than an incompetent bureaucrat is an incompetent cyber bureaucrat. Can you imagine what Kafka would make of it? (Or Jake Thackray...)

Let us know when you're back up & running - and don't get too accustomed to an internet-free existence ;-)

I, too, am sorry to hear of this, Jon. At first I thought you'd a new nickname for your mom...I wondered why it was Pipex instead of "Pip!" :-) Here's to an easy and quick sorting out.

Thanks, and yes, Jeri - while I realise we should have been more careful in monitoring the bank (I'd guess, at least with smaller sums you know are "safe", one tends to look for unexpected money out rather than an expected payment not taken...), really their incompetence has been amazing.

Bonnie, at times, I wish I was out of the Internet and sometimes do a cutting down excercise thesedays.. but I still have dial up even now...

---
I'll review the situation on temp rehousing tommorrow when I'm a bit more clear headed (yes, once again I've let myself have a few many after the beyond my control and despite my best efforts, etc. gets to me... it really is one of my downfalls but I hope in spite of today, I'm still wiser than I was and I know I can't take a few days of heavy drinking). My guess is that we won't be able to get an answer from Pipex until Monday.

I've discussed the options with Pip this morning and she mentioned that during her last conversation that, even though we did have broadband access at that time, Pipex told her it would be 3 to 48hrs before our broadband is restored.

In view of that and in that we have no confidence in the ability of Pipex to process the transaction or in a further telephone assurance from Pipex staff that the matter is resolved, we have decided to opt for moving folkinfo and having a reduced service as a temporary measure.

My next hurdle is that my web host's (not Pipex) control panel has been taken down for maintainence and will be back "soon" (when ever that is). I can't start the move until I have access to this panel.

I laughed to myself when a read that, Giok but it has just happened!

Got an email telling us our broadband service is live - looks like the one they send to new customers with the 10 day stabilisation period...

As things are looking now, perhaps it was as well I couldn't make the transfer to the temp location.

Anyway, sorry again for the down time.

Glad to hear you are back in cyberspace.
I see that you have also implemented changes to your ABC converting page following recent mudtalk about hornpipes not converting to correct lengths of dotted notes with many programmes which convert ABC to dots/MIDI.
Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.
Quack!
Geoff.

Hey Jon, I'm glad things are working out! When I read this I thought immediately of a friend I spoke with just yesterday going through an almost identical payment situation (they have a problem with a cellular company) and they were about to pull their hair out in frustration. I need to call them and see where things are later today and let them know there is hope(:<))

Thanks and spaw, I hope your friends problem resolves easily and quickly.

Geoff, that one was an easy one. A switch (I think -RS) in the command line will force 3:1.

I think to attempt the transposing which was also raised more thoroughly, we need to understand the workings of abcm2ps and abc2abc better otherwise the desired choice of key may not be the one output. It's also possible that an attempted solution would include a modified abc2abc. I don't know if/perhaps even when we will get round to looking at this.
