There's a caravan site at Whitley Bay where I live through the week but I dunno if they let campers on. If you are there Monday night the Bridge Folk Club is on in the centre of the 'castle. It is right at the side of the currently closed high-level bridge and there seems to be lots of people park around there. Try the Bridge pub - see if they have any spaces near them. Got to be worth a go?

Cheers

Dave

Pisst don't tell anyone but there is a race coarse in Newcastle that has a camping site. That said with your camper you should have a look at some Scenic car parks! It was a few years ago now but I went up to Lyndisfarne in my Camper. After spending the first night in the Car Park of some castle or other (Not on the island) that had toilets with hot and cold water. We decided that we could do alternate nights with Car Parks and Camping sites. The Camping sites were too busy it was Summer time so we used the Public Baths for Showers. Here a link for the Camping and Caravan Club you can search for a site on it and it will give you the opening dates. http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/ I don't think they have any restrictions on Banjos.
