Subject: Nov. Shanty Session (NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 12 Nov 07 - 08:52 AM This Saturday, 17 November, is the date for the monthly shanty/forebitter session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH. This promises to be a very special session as we will be joined by Micca Patterson, renowned raconteur, singer and song composer, now gaining notoriety as the creaor of "The Shantyman Who's Never Gone to Sea." Session starts at 3:30; hope to see lots of you there - Tom |

I may even get my dad to attend (it was his foul influence that got me started with folk music) ... he and an old buddy of his keep threatening to show up to sing Eddystone Light. Can't wait to hear Micca again. Had lots of fun at Friday's session and I'm looking forward to hearing a few more of his songs. Nice bloke, too. Of course, I may have to postpone my debut of Mary Ellen Carter out of respect for Shantyman Who's Never... ;-) Peter |

We're somewhat unstuck, at least a day ahead of the rest of the world in New Hampshire but also hung over which may mitigate in the opposite direction. Micca was present with an assortment of parodies in hand. "Oh Not The Fields Of Athenry" was a winner. Some slightly insane woman was running around with a cell phone and sending the music over the air to a 101 year old woman from Ireland. We nearly had a Mollymauk stand-off. "Alabama" brought another slightly odd woman to the table. She was from Alabama and was pleased we did her ship well. I offered to sing "Marching Through Georgia" but Linn hit me. I remember "Sara's Boat", "Rolling Home" with free toast, "Sally Free and Easy", "Three Score and Ten", "Grey Funnel Line", "The Keel Man", Jer'is new song (does it have a name?),and lots more. A good evening but you were missed, Peter and Joann. |

I wrote my version of the tale in the Versions of songs, and etiquette thread. Albatrosses at 10 paces... I'm calling the new song 'Bright Water'. Al and Barbara were there, and did some lovely songs. They've got a knack for finding great songs and then singing them so everyone else falls in love with them. |

Alexander from the Glouchester contingent also did some wonderful songs...think I may finally go to their session tonight as a result (depends on how much snow we get, since that just started).
