Subject: ADDPOP: Magdalene Laundries (Joni Mitchell) From: bobad Date: 28 Oct 07 - 11:06 PM Is this what you're looking for Ad? The Magdalene Laundries Joni Mitchell I was an unmarried girl I'd just turned twenty-seven When they sent me to the sisters For the way men looked at me Branded as a jezebel I knew I was not bound for Heaven I'd be cast in shame Into the Magdalene laundries Most girls come here pregnant Some by their own fathers Bridget got that belly By her parish priest We're trying to get things white as snow All of us woe-begotten-daughters In the steaming stains Of the Magdalene laundries Prostitutes and destitutes And temptresses like me-- Fallen women-- Sentenced into dreamless drudgery ... Why do they call this heartless place Our Lady of Charity? Oh charity! These bloodless brides of Jesus If they had just once glimpsed their groom Then they'd know, and they'd drop the stones Concealed behind their rosaries They wilt the grass they walk upon They leech the light out of a room They'd like to drive us down the drain At the Magdalene laundries Peg O'Connell died today She was a cheeky girl A flirt They just stuffed her in a hole! Surely to God you'd think at least some bells should ring! One day I'm going to die here too And they'll plant me in the dirt Like some lame bulb That never blooms come any spring Not any spring No, not any spring Not any spring |

Subject: Lyr Add: MAGDALEN LAUNDRY (Johnny Mulhern) From: Les in Chorlton Date: 29 Oct 07 - 10:15 AM From the other thread, Jaze, I'd gotten it ready for posting earlier today, so here you are. MAGDALEN LAUNDRY (Johnny Mulhern) Chorus: Oh Lord won't you let me Don't you let me Won't you let me Wash away the stain Oh Lord won't you let me Wash away the stain For seventeen years I've been scrubbing this washboard Ever since the fellas started in after me My mother poor soul didn't know what to do The Canon said, Child there's a place for you Now I'm serving my time at the Magdalen Laundry I'm towing the line at the Magdalen Laundry There's girls from the country girls from the town Their bony white elbows going up and down The Reverend Mother as she glides through the place A tight little smile on the side of her face She's running the show at the Magdalen Laundry She's got nowhere to go but the Magdalen Laundry I'm washing altar linen and cassocks and stoles I'm scrubbing long johns for these holy joes We know where they've been when they're not saving souls What the red wine spilt what the smooth hand poured We're scrubbing it out at the Magdalen Laundry We're squeezing it out at the Magdalen Laundry Sunday afternoon when the Lord's at rest It's off to the prom watch the waves roll by We're chewing on our toffees hear the seagully squawk There go the maggies, the children talk Through our faces they stare at the Magdalen Laundry In our eyes see the glare of the Magdalen Laundry Sung by Eleanor Shanley on her 1995 eponymous(?) solo CD (Grapevine / Warner Music GRACD206) One hell of a song, a beautiful version from Grace notes - delicately understated |

Subject: Lyr Add: MAGDALEN LAUNDRY (Don Mescall) From: GUEST Date: 29 Oct 07 - 07:43 PM mary coughlan does a good version too - and there is another song on the smae issue on frances blacks album how high the moon - written by don mescall Lyrics: Throught the eyes of an innocent child Can't hide what is burning inside The shame and the guilt of disgrace They said she had fallen from grace To the arms of a train engineer Who escaped when the verdict was clear And saw she was quietly installed in the Magdalen Laundry Chorus And oh you can find them there Slaving each day in the heat and the steam And oh every bloody stain Will be carefully scrubbed 'Till it's white and it's clean The Sisters got angry today They took Bridie Power away They said she had broken the rules She swore that the priest from the school... If only they'd asked why she cried They said they'd concluded she'd lied The priest had his own alibi In the Magdalen Laundry Chorus A world set apart by magnolia walls And it's hard to believe That this happened at all Pray the meek shall inhert this heart The Sisters of Mercy still live In the convent on top of the hill The walls of the laundries came down Exposing their sins to the town The ghosts of the girls who had died The souls of the ones who survived Echo their protest inside The Magdalen Laundry Chorus x2 |

Subject: RE: lyr req: Magdalena Laundry From: Mr Red Date: 30 Oct 07 - 09:02 AM FWIW - I hired the video of the film. Never got further than halfway - too distressing, even though I wanted to. But I did see the documentary of the Irish and Scottish Laundaries. There were even C of E ones in England! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Magdalena Laundry From: Jim Dixon Date: 31 Oct 07 - 09:18 PM There's another song called MAGDALENE LAUNDRY written by Jerry Giddens and Michael Packard and performed by Walking Wounded on their album "Artificial Hearts," 2002. I listened to a sound sample, and I'd have to call it rock, not at all folk, and I doubt that it's worth the trouble to transcribe. |
