Subject: BS: HELP - I have to organize a 'Roast' From: TRUBRIT Date: 25 Oct 07 - 06:59 PM A dear friend and real estate colleague is dying before our eyes from a very nasty form of cancer. I came up with the idea to have some kind of life celebration while he was still here so we could tell him to his face that we cared about him........ He is known for his sense of humour and incredibly bad jokes and has requested a Roast rather than any kind of celebration of his life. I've never been to a roast, or seen one......I do know it is a lot of humor and goodhearted fun at the 'roastee's' exoense but are there any things that are automatically expected should be included? We have drinks and food covered and that is about it.....me and my big mouth. HELP! It could be more than 200 people attending. |

This came from the Friars' Club tradition of "roasting" a friend who was the guest of honor and was later degenerated with a television show back in, I think, the 1970s. It's usually a black-tie affair, by the way. |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP - I have to organize a 'Roast' From: Rapparee Date: 25 Oct 07 - 09:25 PM An emcee and good humor by all. A podium and a sound system. Skits about the roastee, especially one person skits, can be done. This should be a time to bring up embarassing stories, triumphs, and defeats. |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP - I have to organize a 'Roast' From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 25 Oct 07 - 09:37 PM Think of it....like a series of toasts....at a groom's batchelor party.
Set up a series of close friends....and allow for spontanaity...as other join in.
You may elect to "catagorize" with you leading off each area:
Women in his life - good times, poor choices.
Food - nuances - likes - dislikes - disasters
Hobbies - Great times - the muddles fudge-boat
Music - intruments - gigs
ALWAYS END - with 60 seconds of fond memories
Let the tears flow....the guy wants to witness his own wake....not unheard of (I can give you reference to a chap with a glass-coffin and bums/hobos/dignitaries/politicians ) pledging allegiance to his flags....as he popped in and out....regarding his full body tatoos.)
Sincerely, |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP - I have to organize a 'Roast' From: Dave Swan Date: 25 Oct 07 - 11:01 PM I agree with Gargoyle about the last 60 seconds. Let the tears flow. The guy knows he's dying and so does everybody else in the room. I think if you work backward from there, and let all the shots you take at him be with affection and from a good heart, you can't go wrong. Good on you for taking this on. D |
