Subject: BS: Looking for a phrase or word From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 15 Oct 07 - 10:26 AM I have a friend who is organising a party in the street where everybody brings their own table, chairs, food, booze etc. I suggested 'street party' - I have heard of the US phrase - 'block party'. Any other suggestions? Any Aussie phrases? |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for a phrase or word From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Oct 07 - 05:18 AM I particularly like the German one - I do have German ancestry! But the mental picture I get is somewhat larger than a few neighbours in a short street... I get images of ferris wheels and fireworks... :-_) Thanks guys - have passed on the suggestions. That doesn't mean that you can't make any more suggestions - as if there was any way of stopping you lot anyhow! :-P |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for a phrase or word From: Helen Date: 19 Oct 07 - 05:45 PM Hi Robin, This is a show on SBS Tv (Oz) tonight. I like the title, because it plays on the derogatory phrase "there goes the neighbourhood" and reminds me of that wonderful ad on Oz tv lately of diverse families bringing and sharing meals to a long table which stretches around all the streets. (Don't ask me what the ad is for. I can't remember. It might be for a brand of cook-in sauces with flavours from different countries.) Helen Here Comes the Neighbourhood 6pm – 6.30pm SBS Saturday 20 October 2007 This is a light and bright insider's look at multicultural Australia. Pria Viswalingam brings his unique brand of storytelling to this all-Aussie, magazine style program. It's a series about the lives of ordinary and extraordinary ethnic Australians who enjoy living in a country that allows them the freedom to celebrate their cultural heritage while forging a new life in this wide open land. The stories are simple, endearing and often hilarious. |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for a phrase or word From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 20 Oct 07 - 12:53 AM You will be going to beat the good old Oz phrase, "A Pissup." ( We, and the Brits among a few others, use the slang word "piss" to mean alcohol. ) JG / FME |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for a phrase or word From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 Oct 07 - 01:24 AM In Harlem, 1920s-1930s, they held rent parties. Everyone was poor and each donated something to help out the poor soul who was behind on his rent. We have block parties in western Canada but since everyone brings a food dish, the term potluck serves as well. |
