Subject: Lyr Req: Song abt cowboy/horses, Robt Earl Keen?
From: GUEST,Scoville at work
Date: 28 Sep 07 - 02:02 PM

Aargh: I need some lyric help. This is driving me insane.

I have been trying to find this song for months and I just cannot find it. I would have sworn it was Robert Earl Keen but I must be wrong, because it's not turning up. I was never clear on the title of it and I can't remember enough of the lyrics to Google it.

The storyline involves a cowboy riding a mare, leading a young colt, as a storm rolls in. Moderate tempo (I think). One or both of the horses might have been buckskin. The words suggest the cover art of Bigger Piece of Sky but apparently the song is not on there.

Might also have been John Prine or somebody else of that Texas singer-songwriter ilk.

Scratch that: The song is "Willie" from Keen's No Kinda Dancer. Now that I have it, I've Googled the lyrics and apparently they aren't on any of the lyric sites, so even if I had remembered them I couldn't have found it. I just happened to stumble on it on the MP3 download previews.

Whew. Sorry.

One of my favs. I was just about to post the title when you posted yours. I missed him last night, right here in our town! I love that CD esp.! If you still want the words to the song, I can dig it out this weekend and transcribe them.

Here's a partial transcription from several sound samples:

WILLIE
Robert Earl Keen, Jr.

Hanging on the wall just like a thousand times I been there,
A picture of a field of dandelions,
And a young stud-colt a-following some old cowboy on a brood mare,
Bound to make it home by dinnertime.

There's a thunderhead a-coming from the west and he's sure thinking
The rain would do this dusty dirt some good,
But it ain't a cowboy's weather, so he nudges his old faithful,
And turns around to call out to the stud:

"Come on, Willie. There's a black cloud coming yonder.
The devil beats his wife with a silver chain.
Come on, Willie, for can't you hear the thunder?
Your ma and me don't travel well in rain."

It ain't nothing much to look at, just a print I got from Grandma,
A real west river cowgirl in her day
And sometimes I need religion….

Damn. Mr. Database says I have this CD, but I can't find it. If nobody posts lyrics in a few days, remind me to look again.

This will be a Mudcat coup -

I have scoured for hours USA/GERMANY/CHINA websites and newsgroups multiple search engines....it does not exist in lyric form on the web. I like the 30sec mp3 samples.

A one post request:

Jim got most of it, but here's the entire lyrics, with unclear parts in parantheses. Maybe someone else will be able to hear it more clearly:

WILLIE
Robert Earl Keen, Jr.

Hanging on the wall just like a thousand times I've been there,
A picture of a field of dandelions,
And a young stud-colt a-following some old cowboy on a brood mare,
Bound to make it home by dinnertime.

Come on, Willie, boy, can't you hear the thunder?
Your ma and me don't travel well in rain."

It ain't nothing much to look at, just a print I got from Grandma,
A real west river cowgirl in her day
And sometimes I need religion since the old girl's gone before me
And that's when I can hear the cowboy say:

"Come on, Willie. There's a black cloud coming yonder.
The devil beats his wife with a silver chain.
Come on, Willie, boy, can't you hear the thunder?
Your ma and me don't travel well in rain."

Now the western (theater?) has become another sideshow
A'sellin' out the bygone days gone by
And whenever we know it's rainin', we can hear it (call/pour?) out thunder
We can see it pour out clouds up in the sky.

"Come on, Willie. There's a black cloud coming yonder.
The devil beats his wife with a silver chain.
Come on, Willie, boy, can't you hear the thunder?
Your ma and me don't travel well in rain." (repeat last line)
