CNN's "Lifting The Veil"

A powerful & truly sad documentary on the life of Afghan Women. I'm watching with tears-these poor women, victims of their culture, are burning themselves to escape. The saddest news imaginable. This may be a repeat-I know not.

If you've a strong stomach-watch.

I tuned in at 3:05 NY time-I do not know it's length.

Yes, Mickey, we Western Women just can't even imagine what these women go through. I read a book about a US woman who married an (Irani? I can't remember for sure) man. The title of the book was 'Not Without My Daughter'. The wife wanted OUT of the marriage and country. Husband was willing to let her go but not take the small female child.

The CRAP visited on women is still just unbelievable. All because we have 'slits' instead of 'spigots'. Just where do these 'men' think they would be if it were not for WOMEN bearing children? Do they think they can take over that job?????

No education, chadors and robes, rape, honour killings, female infantacide.....is there any real way to just stop this madness?

And, yes, before anyone points it out, start with our own countries. AKA, the Fundamental Latter Day Saints 'church' and others just as bad.

Rant over. One of my Pet Peeves.

Good thoughts, Sorcha. I just cannot ever imagine the mindset it takes to douse oneself with kerosene & torch it. I do not think they gain paradise like the suicide bombers. Why the men jeer & spit on a begging woman boggles my mind. Don't they have enough brains to know hunger & want is the reason? The women in troubled labor are kept at home till there is no remedy. Many die.

I saw the movie based on Betty Mahmoody's book.It was
well done & a real heart pounder. Sally Field, though I don't dig her, was excellent!

Yes, thank you Mickey. That was the author. I haven't seen the film.
See also the thread on Where does the Child Support go?

Can moms use child support money to go to school? Probably not but I don't know for sure.

(I sort of forgot/blanked out female 'circumcision'. It's just too horrible to think about)

'Lifting the Veil' is very disturbing but a very well made documentary.
The act of setting herself on fire is rarely a suicide attempt. It is an attempt to get someone to help the victim and shed light on the abuse she is suffering at Home.
Thank you for providing the link to the Afghan Women's Educational Center Kat.
It is, I am sure you agree, an amazing project.
Jude
