Subject: Internet Radio- the easy way-with extras From: Bill D Date: 17 Sep 07 - 11:05 PM Yes, I know...you can go to certain sites and click on their radio buttons, and 'maybe' hear some music...but can you instantly record what you hear? Here is a program (Windows only...sorry) that will offer you hundreds of stations in many genrés (they even know many types of 'folk'!). http://www.raimasoftware.com/ here's a picture of it running on my computer, playing a Bluegrass station It gives you all their selections, plus the ability to add other stations that YOU know of, and to name it and sort it as you wish, and keep a 'favorites' list. And, yes, you can record what you hear, sorted by station name or artist, and put in a directory of your choice. Last night, I heard Patsy Montana singing "Pistol Packin' Momma" and got the words I had been wondering about. (This was on "The Cowboy Cultural Society") and...wouldn't you know it....there are other similar deals... Here is Nexus Radio which does similar things, with a different 'look'...but with 'maybe' more stations....more than you are ever likely to want. There are, I believe, a couple of others, but these are being praised by the freeware group I frequent. I almost feel guilty offering these when there is already YouTube and many other sources....technology is putting our brains (mine anyway) on overload trying sort thru all the options....so use 'em or dont...but they do work. |

Subject: RE: Internet Radio- the easy way-with extras From: Amos Date: 17 Sep 07 - 11:21 PM I get a wide spectrum of online radio through iTunes, as well as thos eindependent stations which broadcast through their websites. I also, separately, have the ability to turn any sound stream ongoing into a file. Suits my needs, but these sound like good programs. A |

Subject: RE: Internet Radio- the easy way-with extras From: GUEST,A broadcaster and Folk Supporter Date: 19 Sep 07 - 04:28 PM Recording radio stations off the internet is both immoral and a complete pain for broadcasters and artists. Who are you kidding? I'm surprised your post hasn't been removed from here. Have you any idea of the number of artists that frequent Mudcat. Do you really think they approve of you encouraging people to basically get their music for free. If you like it why don't you just buy it. I run a station and people like you stop others from listening as the majority of you freeloaders use up two slots per listener: one to rip and one to listen. I don't pay out over a £1000 per year for you to come and rip off the music that artists have sent me for promo and listening pleasure of music lovers! This is bordering on spam and should be removed. If you're not here to support folk music then why don't you go find another forum! |

Subject: RE: Internet Radio- the easy way-with extras From: GUEST,Pete Date: 20 Sep 07 - 02:01 PM Dude you sound foolish and you do not know what you are talking about. 1) 90% of Artists do not make money from CD sales they make money from concerts. 2) Not all stream recording software take up 2 server slots. Many of the new software only use one slot for both listening and recording. Good find Bill D! |

Subject: RE: Internet Radio- the easy way-with extras From: Bill D Date: 20 Sep 07 - 03:03 PM so, broadcaster..are you saying that the internet radio stations should be banned? Or merely that we should "listen, but not save for later listening and learning of songs"? I have been listening to folk music on regular radio for many, many years...and I have some old tape recordings from "Folk Festival USA" on NPR, and from my friend Mary Cliff's weekend program on WETA...etc. Sometimes I play these to refresh my memory, or re-find a song. And many times I like what I hear enough that I go to the performers concerts when they come thru and buy their CDs. Even when I do NOT...or cannot...buy CDs, I do nothing with the tapes or sound files. I am not selling them, repackaging them or posting them on the WWW. By listening to internet radio, I get to hear far more music than I could afford to 'buy' on my limited retirement income, and I increase my knowlege and enjoyment. I agree that there *IS* some concern with pirated music and people whose goal is never to spend a dime, but to own all the latest stuff for free, and who copy, share and sell entire CDs without permission.....so...what are you going to do? You MUST realize that **ANY** sound, image, or text that you can hear, see or read online can be saved or downloaded by one means or another. There are ways to make it more difficult, but no way to stop it. (For Pete's sake! I could, if nothing else, just hold a mic up to the speakers while listening...just as I did to learn a song 35 years ago!) So...someone has designed a program to relieve me of the work, and I should pretend it isn't there? I repeat...*I* am not the problem...and most of the folks here are not, either. I suppose that IF someone figured out how to totally protect all CDs, online music and make any recording possible only for a fee, I would shrug and deal with it....I am NOT trying to cheat performers, and I OWN many, many records and CDs. I know that this issue will not be resolved soon....maybe never. The ONLY way I can see to even approach the problem is to figure out how to fairly monitor every IP for every song they listen to and charge a fee in their ISP bill that goes to ASCAP to be redistributed to artists. Would YOU like to create & oversee that bureaucratic nightmare? Sorry, broadcaster....I see your concern, but right now, I see programs like I mentioned as far more beneficial than criminal. |
