Subject: Tom Paxton Concert Review From: Charley Noble Date: 07 Sep 07 - 10:52 PM Well, this won't be much of a review but we certainly enjoyed Tom's concert this evening at the Chocolate Church in Bath, Maine. Tom looks good and sounds good, and seems in fine spirits. There was a new George W. Bush song, an update on his Nixon Vietnam War song, which got a enthusiastic response from the audience. There were two songs dedicated to his daughters when they were much younger which I really liked. The most haunting song has to be the 9/11 song about the firefighters pounding up the stairs while everyone else is fleeing down, which he somehow managed to sing at a memorial service at the engine house adjacent to the Trade Towers site. There was a song in remembrance of Tommy Mackem and the Clancy Brothers. Then there were his old standards that everyone was pleased to be able to sing along on, and it was a singing crowd. Tom was accompanied by Geoff Barkley (?) who also did a fine job. Geoff also led a wonderful song of advice to those just setting out on the road of life. Here's to Tom! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Last time I saw Geoff was back in the 1990s, but I assume he's still based in Cambridge, MA. Geoff has been Tom Paxton's accompanist on New England gigs for many years. |

The Chocolate Church (in Bath, Maine) has a lot of interesting concerts planned for the coming year - calendar here. Next are Patty Larkin September 15, Enter the Haggis September 22, and the Battlefield Band September 28 - not to mention our friend Allison Freeman's "Singing our History in the City of Ships" series which will be there September 14 and 21 (she's doing a weekly series through the summer alternating between several venues in Bath, the "City of Ships"). |

I believe it is his saying that John McCutcheon quotes when he speaks of "short shelf life songs" or topical songs which apply to current events. The 9-11 song he wrote is called The Bravest and it is on his Looking for the Moon (CD) Released: October 22, 2002., I often sing his songs...I Wonder Where I'm Bound, Ramblin' Boy, Last Thing On My Mind, and others. It's wonderful that Tom Paxton has earned a higher level of appreciation in the UK than he has in the States, at least in the States under the current administration. There are times when I'm tempted to migrate. But then I think "I'm living in the most powerful and dangerous nation in the world and maybe I have a duty to do something more responsible." Subject: RE: Tom Paxton Concert Review From: Rog Peek Date: 23 Sep 07 - 06:34 AM You might as well stay where you are Charley, you'll get no joy over here: On the Iraq War, Michael Ancram, Alan Keen and Helen Southworth according to their voting records, were all strongly for going to war in Iraq, and Lord Neil Kinnock was certainly not an outspoken critic of the war. Between 24th Sept 2002 and 18 March 2003 there were six important votes in Parliament on the Iraq war, Michael Martin was absent for all of them. They may very well be fans of Tom and his songs, but it's a bloody shame they don't listen a little closer to the words. I hope there were a few red faces when he sang 'I Call It Murder'.
