Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: SINSULL Date: 09 Aug 07 - 05:58 PM Closest folk/blues that I know of is the Press Room in Portsmouth. They have a website for directions. Friday night is the night a large group of musicians meet, sing and play. |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: curmudgeon Date: 09 Aug 07 - 07:56 PM Hi Deedee - Blues are rare at the sessions, but not discouraged if you'd like to do some songs. There's a very good chance that the post-session band upstairs will feature the blues as Bruce Pingree, who doea the booking, is blues scholar. The session starts around 4:30 and runs till 9:00and is a mixed bag or trad songs and tunes, mostly English, Scottish, American and Irish. Could be some bluegrass, coutry and old timey as well. Make sure to introduce yourself - I'm the one with the long grey beard - Tom PS - The Press Room opens at 4:00, |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: SINSULL Date: 09 Aug 07 - 11:27 PM Jed Marum is doing a house concert in SOuth Portland at TRUBRITS on Saturday night. $15 for the concert and a meal - a very good meal - Tom is cooking. PM jacqui for details. There are a number of motels in the area but again it is tourist season and it is not likely you will find anything at this late date. TRUBRIT's house is full and so is mine. Since Kendall sold the motor home beds are booked way in advance. |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Aug 07 - 09:06 PM Why is that EB? Can't the natives actually speak real English or what? I once spent a half-hour talking with a police officer in Wells Branch and neither of us had any idea what the other was saying. I turned to a passer-by and asked if he could hear me and he said, "Ah-Yeh," or something agreeable so I knew I was okay. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: EBarnacle Date: 11 Aug 07 - 12:23 PM Spaw, you must understand that the nature of the language in Maine is a matter of local pride. Each municipality has people who believe they speak pure Anglo-English, as compared to the rest o' them ignorant fools. The situation is analogous to what happened in China where there were several similar written languages but each area had its own spoken tongue, indecipherable to a non-local listener. |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: jacqui.c Date: 11 Aug 07 - 02:40 PM My husband keeps telling me that I must learn to speak English. I just tell him that I AM speaking English - he wants me to learn to speak American but I don't think I could ever pick up and speak Southern Maine, let alone Downeast. |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: SINSULL Date: 11 Aug 07 - 03:34 PM Lewis picked up "American" much to his mother's dismay. Something about a glass and a glaahhhs. lol |

Subject: RE: BS: OOB MAINE Help Need Info On Accommodation From: Greg B Date: 15 Aug 07 - 09:14 PM My darling dear, from Orono, insists that it's "Mainards." We're going for ten days starting tomorrow (with an overnight on't'road in Essex, CT). Kayaks an 'aw, bound for t'Pushaw. So if you hear melodeon music drifting across the lake of an evening, you know who to blame. Similarly, if you see two kayaks of sky-and-blue 12-footers making their way across the Pushaw, introduce yourselves. We're most likely to be see down about Mouse Island and Gould's landing. |
