Subject: Lyr Req: Lyrics/Tune request-The Fiddler's Ear From: GUEST,faintingoat Date: 05 Aug 07 - 03:18 PM Hi everyone Looking for a song called (I think) The Fiddler's Ear...I heard it once a few years ago and for some reason didn't record it.It's about a man that ends up making a deal with the devil trading his ear (he's a fiddler) for his love's life or something....completely haunting tune though, it gave me chills when I did her it. Thanks a lot! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lyrics/Tune request-The Fiddler's Ear From: Dan Schatz Date: 05 Aug 07 - 07:02 PM The song is written by the brilliant Steve Sellors, from New Brunswick Canada, and can be found on Anne Dodson's Against the Moon CD. (You can order that through Timberhead Music.) My understanding is that it was inspired by the story of an aging Canadian fiddler who became deaf toward the end of his life. I think Steve sometimes lurks on the Mudcat. Perhaps he'll post the lyrics? In the meantime, I heartily recommend the CD, which includes three of Steve's fine songs. Dan Schatz |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Fiddler's Ear (Steve Sellors) From: GUEST Date: 04 Oct 21 - 09:57 AM O the crops being in and the work being done all feasting and drinking to the very last one to the very last one they all made (?) a row when John lifted his fiddle and rosined the bow. With all of his love and with fiddle to chin put bow to the string and bade music begin bade music begin to fill out the night with a tune that was sweet and an air that was light. And the night was the finest that ever had been and the ladies the fairest that ever were seen that ever were seen in sight of the hall but the fairest of them was a stranger to all. It was on this fair maiden that John’s eyes were cast for her every tune from the first to the last from the first to the last he loved her completely with bow and with string he told her so sweetly. And John’s heart was lighter than ever before as the maid stood before him and danced on the floor and danced on the floor till the clock struck on twelve and the sky blew wide open and thundered from Hell And the door blew wide open in wind, fire and smoke in the flames stood a stranger who growlingly spoke who growlingly spoke, shaking windows and roof standing in flames on one cloven hoof. I have come for the maiden that is my design I will not be dissuaded, she surely is mine she surely is mine with a soul to be damned for she is the daughter of no mortal man. John stepped up between them, so gallantly bold I will not allow you this fair woman’s soul this fair woman’s soul, I’ll repay you with mine and if’ll you spare the maid, from this world I’ll resign. Well, I don’t want your soul, John, but gladly I’ll trade and bargain I will, if you so love the maid and if you love the maid that much more than yourself then I’ll leave you both souls but I’ll take something else. Now the fiddler has taken the maid for his wife but no more is there love in John’s lonely life in John’s lonely life there is no more cheer for the Devil had taken the fiddler’s ear. |
