DT Lyrics:

Subject: Joanna & Rhody (correction)

It appears that the song "Joanna & Rhody", a rowing song from the Georgia Sea Islands has been taken for a ride down stream. In the DT it's listed as "Joanna the Rowen" & I'm also hearing it sung as "Joanna is rowing". I haven't been able to find much beside that Bessie Jones has recorded it as Joanna & Rhody & I have a recording from the 'Southern Journey' Lomax collection vol.13 'Earliest Times with Peter Davis singing it as Joanna & Rhody in the 1st line. There it's titled "Come Row the Boat Child". Mr Davis has this song from his grandfather when he was a young boy. The recording has only 2 verses

Joanna & Rhody, come row the boat child (3x)
An' lemme go home

Child I'm tired, come row the boat child (3X)
An' lemme go home

I don't have Bessie Jones's version, could someone post her verses?

I've seen it elsewhere but I can't find it (& can't remember where) in what I have of Lydia Parrish's collection & can't find it in any of what I have from the Lomax collections. I do know other verses but don't know the sources so I don't want to put those up.
So, can anyone clear up where this Rowen/rowing came into the song & can it be corrected in the DT?
And does anyone have more traditional verses that they can site the sources of?

Thanks
Barry
