Subject: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Escamillo Date: 10 Jul 07 - 01:33 AM Snow was always 1,200 KM West or SouthWest of this large city. Yesterday, in the Argentina Independence day, we received tons of snow all over our astonished faces for many hours, and it is still snowing. My backyard is white, cars, streets, trees and the Obelisc are dressed in snow, in an incredible and fascinating show of Nature. See this photos and comments (in Spanish)http://www.lanacion.com.ar/informaciongeneral/nota.asp?nota_id=924315 Meteorologists say that this is not related to the general global warming, but rather in relation with the upcoming of extreme conditions (floods, storms, rain or lack of rain, extreme temperatures, hurricane in Brazil, etc.) A breeze of fresh air for all of you who are bearing temperatures of 40 C degrees. And a hug from your friend in the far South. Un abrazo, Andrés |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: alanabit Date: 10 Jul 07 - 02:15 AM Hi Escamillo. Good to see you here. In Cologne, Germany, the Rhine is higher than I have ever seen it in July. It is also a fair bit higher than you sometimes see it in February. We had a very warm April and May, a very wet June. Now we are told that temperatures of 35°C are on the way at the weekend... There seems to be strange weather in a lot of places at the moment. I don't think your snow will last for long, but I can only imagine how exotic it must seem in Buenos Aires. For us it is very rare in Cologne too, but not rare enough to have that effect. The things you get to see, eh? Will your grandchildren be alking about it? |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Escamillo Date: 10 Jul 07 - 03:00 AM Ha! My grandson Leonel (3 years old) said "está nevando en serio!!" (it´s snowing seriously!!) The other (Dalia, 6 months) is very young to make comments, but she already has some photos under the snow to see later. All we, kids and adults, are really fascinated with this strange phenomenon. Last summer we have had 42 C degrees in Buenos Aires, and important floods. The Rhine´s threatening to wet German´s feet. What is coming now ? Un abrazo Andrés |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Jim Lad Date: 10 Jul 07 - 03:10 AM For the benefit of those in smaller continents.... summer heat melts the snow on the mountains, raises the river levels. I'm sure most of you knew that but some don't. Congratulations on the snow, Escamillo. You can keep it. Please! |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Escamillo Date: 10 Jul 07 - 03:25 AM Someone is treating us as idiots. May be, snow in Buenos Aires after 89 years may be a moronic comment, but anyway, it´s too fascinating !! Un abrazo Andrés |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: alanabit Date: 10 Jul 07 - 04:10 AM Correct Jim Lad - well nearly correct... If you live downstream on the Rhine, you expect the snows (in the Swiss Alps) to melt between February and March. If rainfall is high at that time, places on the Rhine experience "Hochwasser" - literally "high water". That can be quite dramatic. You just don't expect the Rhine to be a few centimetres below its banks in July! I am sure that the melting of snows happens at slightly different times of year in different places. Hope you are all having fun Escamillo! |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: John MacKenzie Date: 10 Jul 07 - 05:22 AM Seems like only yesterday that the Rhine was so low, that they were operating a one way system in parts where the water was too low for two way traffic. G. |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: alanabit Date: 10 Jul 07 - 06:33 AM That could have happened last year, Giok, in the heat wave. In the summer of 2003, I believe that traffic effectively stopped in places, where it was less than a metre deep. |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Jul 07 - 07:15 AM "Meteorologists say that this is not related to the general global warming, but rather in relation with the upcoming of extreme conditions (floods, storms, rain or lack of rain, extreme temperatures, hurricane in Brazil, etc.)" Same thing, as I understand it. "Global warming" is a misleading term - what it really comes down to is that an overall increase of temperature across the whole panel means various extremes of weather locally, ie "floods, storms, rain or lack of rain, extreme temperatures, hurricane... Looks pretty anyway. Snow can turn ordinary city scenes into magic cityscapes, just like that. |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Rapparee Date: 10 Jul 07 - 09:04 AM Snow in the mountains is pretty. Snow in the meadows is lovely. Snow on the sidewalks, on the streets, in the parking lots, well, it's not so pretty and nice. But in Buenos Aires in JULY??? |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 10 Jul 07 - 09:50 AM lotsa' places in the southern hemisphere don't get snow! It's about 160 years since Sydney had a bit of snow - sometime in the 1830's? if I can remember something I read 25-30 years ago when I used to work at the Weather Bureau. But we do get snow in the Blue Mountains 50 miles west of Sydney! thanks Escamillo for your link. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Jul 07 - 11:29 AM Of course snow in cities is pretty, when its falling and when its new fallen. Once people start tramping over it and driving over it it turns to slush, and that's not so pretty. But even so, in proper cities where there are some buildings around that don't have flat roofs, and where there are trees in some of the streets, it still looks good. ................................................. July in the Southern half of the world is equivalent to January in the North. If they're ever going to have snow, that's the right time of the year. |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jul 07 - 11:55 AM LOL, Andres! What fun for you all. Now you know what Wyoming could be like, almost all of the time!**bg** Love seeing the video of your city and the snow is beautiful. It has been horribly hot here in western Colorado..well into the 100's every day for the past three weeks. We don't usually get those high of temps until Aug and then only for a short time. Haven't had any rain in ages, either. Enjoy your snow, esp. with Leonel. My 3.5 year old Morgan - the Grandson, loves snow, too! luvyakat |

If it makes you feel better, in east London yesterday, July 9th, allegedly summer, we had a hail storm. And it took a while for the hailstones to melt. But there was a lovely rainbow. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: SNOW in Buenos Aires after 89 years From: Escamillo Date: 10 Jul 07 - 06:30 PM Nice photos in your link, Kat ! Yes Peter, it is really beautiful, and the snow was not enough to produce too much mud on the streets. The phenomenon is very rare for many reasons, for example: this is a flat territory, a fertile prairie almost at sea level. To see some hills we have to travel 500 km, or 1200km to see the Andes. Winters are relatively mild and summers are almost tropical. Most people have seen snow only on vacations but many are seeing the snow for the first time in their lives. And the palm trees dressed in white. Now we expect the second snowfall, we are so pretentious ! Now if Argentina wins the Soccer America Cup, there´s no doubt that nobody will work in this country for days. Un abrazo - Andrés |
