Subject: why??? From: skarpi Date: 01 Jul 07 - 04:04 PM Hallo all , I have a question . I went to Icelandair to check the airfair to Baltimore this coming November and ........... I am told that If I want to travel to the Us this November I have to fill out form with 48 guestions about my private live ? among others information ? What !!!!! its not eneough filling out the green paper on the plain anymore ?? Why ? what can and will they do with this info ? ja I forgot I am already a terrorist , shoot first , ask later ?? I am pritty sure that I am NOT coming to the US this year and so are many others I know . so I ask is this realy what the us want , people stop visiting the country ??? I am not a terrorist , and I wwant to visit Us , but this is getting far to long . I am thinking about this all over again . :>( All the best Skarpi Iceland . |

The "new rules" requiring a passport to visit Canada or Mexico have been "suspended" due to inability of the misgovernors to issue passports for all those who have need of one. US citizens will be able, for a short time, to cross the borders with "any government issued photo ID" plus proof that they've applied for a passport. This "relief" is for a fairly short temporary period, and if you don't return while it's still in effect, it's quite likely you won't have your passport yet when you're ready to come back and will be forever unable to re-enter the US, since they'll never send you your new passport in GITMO where you'll be incarcerated for trying to enter illegally. At least that's how it looks from here (with only minor corruption of the news to arrive at my crystal clear extrapolation). John |

We're constantly subjected to so much rhetoric about the danger we're in from the terrorists, etc. etc. and meanwhile the government just gets more and more heavy handed, powerful, and intrusive under the guise of "protecting us". I understand the need for security, but how does that fit in with things like denying visas to people like Les Barker???? I tend to believe that real terrorists will easily find a way in, and the ones who will NOT come are legitimate tourists and performers. I myself got on some kind of "list" for a couple of years - no idea how I got on and how I apparently got off, because they don't seem to detain me at security anymore. Anyway I was roughly jerked out of line and made to stand in a "corral" while the other passengers went through security. I was rudely told that my name appeared on a list of 'suspicious individuals'. Um...my name, and it is my real name, is MARY SMITH ! Gee I wonder how many Mary Smith's there are in the world! This went on for about two years, I could not use the automatic check ins at the airport, it would flag me and they would have to make all kinds of phone calls before they would issue my boarding pass, and I would get stopped at security. Then I appeared to get taken off the list as mysteriously as I was put on it! Never figured out what the 'list' was or who I could appeal to about being falsely singled out as suspicious. It's all getting to be like living in a Franz Kafka novel. That said, once you get past our paranoid entry requirements you can usually expect a warm welcome from us Amuricans! |

Maine is opposing it. But I suspect it is only a matter of time and the Passport will become that ID. As if that will make a difference in preventing terrorists from functioning. As usual, law-abiding citizens will have the correct paperwork and others will have forgeries. Meantime they chip, chip, chip away at our freedom. |

For many, it just isn't worth risking all the hassle. Not so many years ago, I remember crossing back and forth at St.Stephen,NB/Calais,ME, in taxicabs full of pubcrawlers, where the guard would lean out the window and shout "Are allaya from Canada/the US?", and that would constitute border procedures. (Although it mightily hurts to say so, being from a clamdigging community, the best steamed clams I have ever eaten were in a Calais bar.) |
