Subject: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Passing Thru Date: 28 Jun 07 - 03:13 PM Hi, Any 'catters' out there who live in / know the Castle Douglas area of Scotland. I will be passing thru on a one night stop next Thursday (5th July)or possibly the following Thursday. If there are any singarounds on that night I would try & attend. I am going to a local singaround now but hope that someone may have info. Thanks in anticipation |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: Commander Crabbe Date: 30 Jun 07 - 06:00 PM Passin thru Partner and I spent a fortnight in the Machars at the camp site in Garlieston (about 30 minutes drive fm CD) we found that there wasn't very much in the way of sessions/FC (those that were advertised that is) the pub in Garlieston has a session on a sunday lunchtime once a fortnight I think. Stranraer has a folk club and can be googled I think. However we weren't looking to travel too far so I should think there is at least something going on around Kircudbright or Dumfries. It is probably easier to ask around when you get there (or before if you know someone there. Sorry can't be of more help. CC |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Passing Thru Date: 30 Jun 07 - 06:49 PM CC Thanks for trying anyway! The farmers I know in that area know nowt about music (or whatever it is we do) |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Ray Date: 01 Jul 07 - 04:05 AM Not much of anything happens in the Garlieston area, that's the best thing about it. If you can get from Garlieston to Castle Douglas in half an hour what are you driving? - Its 44 miles! |
|
Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: Commander Crabbe Date: 01 Jul 07 - 05:24 PM Ray Ok maybe an hour provided you don't get behind the truck convoy. Is it really 44 miles? To be honest I wasn't taking much notice of the time taken to travel coz we were on holiday at the time. I stand corrected CC PS I was driving a Maclaren Mercedes twin turbo supercharged four berth motorhome with go faster stripes. |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: Roughyed Date: 02 Jul 07 - 05:51 PM There used to be a great folk festival out at Port William and I remember the lovely Luce Women who are from round that area. So there is stuff going on presumably. Perhaps it might be worth contacting the Luce Women via thier site. |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: Davetnova Date: 03 Jul 07 - 03:09 AM I think Dalbeattie folk club is a Thursday night. It's aboutsix or seven miles from CD. |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Passin Thru Date: 03 Jul 07 - 03:11 AM Thanks Davetnova - I may stay in Dalbeattie (I know it well). |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: JulieF Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:30 AM Don't think he can quite manage that but its worth trying to get there for a Wed. I think I will try in the Autumn but its not the easiest place to get to by public transport. Say hello to the old place for me. I grew up just outside CD and went to primary school there. Have a lot of wonderful memories of a fairly idylic childhood. Haven't been back for years. Have fun J |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Passin Thru Date: 03 Jul 07 - 11:54 AM JulieF Where are you that you need public transport to Auchencairn? I have been visiting Castle Douglas / Crossmichael / Parton for 30 odd years & have only missed 2 years. Lovely area, lovely people. (Used to be with family so no folk clubs) But this is a flying visit. Thursday evening only. Later in the year maybe! |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Ray Date: 04 Jul 07 - 12:17 PM CC Yes according to the Michelin routefinder its 44 miles. Not actually come across the Maclarren Mercedes version - ours is a 2 berth 2.2HDI Peugeot - but we presumably stayed on the same campsite. I hope the new flats they are building on the end of the pier don't spoil the place. The pub was a bit wierd - the landlady seemed to spend more time outside with a fag on than behind the bar. The campsite in CD is also a bit surreal - more like a car park, but the showers are good, providing you can use the ones with the electronic access. Ray |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: Pete_Standing Date: 04 Jul 07 - 01:41 PM Here is info for Dalbeattie, I don't know if the club is still running:- Dalbeattie Folk Club - The Pheasant Pluckers F.C. runs fortnightly, in the Pheasant Hotel. Dalbeattie. On Thursday evenings from 9.00 till whenever; Sessions, Guests.-Sessions, Guests, etc. For more info. contact; Phyllis Martin. (01556) 612306 However, the last time I went there the club was held upstairs in a pub in the High Street - The Crown possibly? Also check in what is known as the "Two Minute Silence", the Dumfries and Galloway news. It might have listings for what is going on. The newsagaents and shops in CD frequently have posters announcing ceilidhs etc, so check that out too. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Finally, use Google to search for folk music Dumfries (and Galloway) but the link for Galloway folk seems to be dead. Julie - I have relatives in Auchencairn and have been to that session a long while while back, predominantly tunes I seem to remember. |

Subject: RE: Music in Castle Douglas Area 5th July? From: GUEST,Passin Thru Date: 04 Jul 07 - 02:19 PM Pete - Googling is what I tried first. No results apart from Dalbeattie Pheasant Pluckers Folk Club. (Hope I spelt that right) However, I have been ringing the Hotel for 2 days with no answer but have managed to speak to Phyllis Martin who ran the club. Unfortunately she tells me the club hasn't run for over two years. Never mind. First call on arrival is always CD Tourist Information office whose staff are always helpful. Other than that its a solo sing wherever I decide to stop. Watch this space for my return ............. |
