Subject: Tech: Good sidearm mic holder ??
From: Les B

When playing through a PA system I like to keep the floor clutter down by having the mic for guitar and/or banjo mounted on the same stand as the vocal mic. I've got a cobbled together gooseneck system which wasn't very satisfactory the last time out - it drooped like it'd been to a brewery.

Does anyone use, or know of, a good reliable sidearm system ?
I'm in the states. The ones I found with a quick look online seemed kind of cumbersome.
Thanks.

I could suggest a short arm system, but at our age, we probably couldn't keep it up for long enough for a whole gig...

What?

That's a ... door...

Ok...

Well you made me look, Wesley: You're right. Two boom stands is a real clutter in some settings. I was about to repair one of mine and you got me thinking. I'll go with the boom for vocals and a regular for the instruments. With the quality of mics now, I can easily afford anywhere from 5"-10" from the instrument. Not sure that I could handle it being on the same stand though.

QuikLok makes a clamp-on boom arm attachment. Model A107. It works pretty nicely. It clamps on to the shaft of a mike stand and has an adjustable boom of its own. I use it for miking an acoustic guitar while using another boom on the main shaft for singing. Zzounds has it for $29.95.

Here's the one we use. Works good, as we say up here.

Thanks for the equipment names, jeffp & midchuck, both look promising.

Jim Lad - I'm looking for real compact. I don't mind the vocal and istrmnt on same stand.   I have also worked with a boom and a separate instrument stand, but the other night four of us had to share a small makeshift stage and it was tight beyond belief.

Even as a solo, it can be a problem. I'll probably be looking into something this week but the goose-neck, as I'm sure you know, can be noisy when adjusted, lets go at the wrong time and looks pretty bad.
The problem with the others is they point to your mid-line when you really want something offset a little.
I'll let you know if I see something.

The QuikLok boom is about 3 feet long and can be adjusted to point off to the side. It works great for a guitar while the main stand holds the vocal mike. From what I see, the other one offsets 6 inches and could have a boom attached to it as well.

Les B The day you posted this, I went out looking for one of those brackets but the shop had sold out and I bought a new stand instead,
Well today I bought a pop filter for about $35 and when I was assembling it I noticed that the mounting screw was the same size as the mic holder. Sure enough, it fits and if you're using a fairly light instrument mic then you can always use the wee goose-neck as well.
The brand is "Raxess" or something but am sure that others will work.
I like it but because of the weight of my AKGs, I'll have to turn one of the feet towards me.
Cheers!
Jim

Sidearm? You mean attach the mike to a handgun?

Wouldn't a shotgun mike give better coverage?

:-P

I have since found a pretty decent side mic set-up, I think it is quick-loc.
Also got a short Peavey boom to go up top so everything is on one stand with the proper distances between voice and instrument sounds.

I got the short boom too, Les.
I'll try it out on Tuesday.
If the whole works doesn't fall over on me,
I'll probably stick with it.
Nice to get rid of the extra stand
but change is always a bugger!
