Subject: Lyr Add: GENE AUTRY (Marty Robbins)
From: Lin in Kansas

Hi all--

I have the lyrics for this nostalgic country song, but am looking for (preferably) a midi, so I can turn it into sheet music. Anyone have a clue where I might find one? I've tried Googling and boy, does that get confusing with both those famous names!

Thanks!
Lin

Here's what I did find:

Artist: Marty Robbins
Song: Gene Autry
Album: Everything I've Always Wanted [Columbia]

The childhood memories I treasure the most I suppose
Are the Saturday afternoons spent at the town picture show
I worked all day long in the fields but at night I would dream
Of seeing Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen

Saturday mornings I'd walk twenty miles or more
Twelve o'clock noon found the first one in line at the door
'Cause all week I'd work but today I would fulfill my dream
And I'd see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen.

The man in the white cowboy hat was a hero to me
He was then, he is now, and I guess he always will be
Time takes away many things but it can't take a dream
And I can still see him go ridin' across the big screen.

When as a kid from our shack on the desert I'd roam
My daddy would whip me 'cause I'd never be around home
But mom understood me I know, cause she'd smile when I'd say,
Gene Autry and I had been rounding up outlaws all day

The man in the white cowboy hat was a hero to me
He was then, he is now, and I guess he always will be
And every so often I go back in time and I dream
And I see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen

And I see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen

Looks like it came out on his Columbia recording "Evrything I always wanted" and the full title, which you probably already know:-), is "My Hero, Gene Autry." Couldn't find a midi!

You can look through all of his albums HERE, be sure to click the subsequent pages as there are several. I looked through the ones on the first page of the link and didn't see it. I think those links lead to iTunes if you can find the song.

Hope this helps...kat

Well, scratch that, Linn. I found the song on page 13! No sound files. There are several LPs available, if you search on the album name, though, including on on eBay which is available for ten bucks if you "buy it now."

I have just programmed www.pandora.com to play Marty Robbins songs, maybe they will have it and you can listen at least. I'll let ya know if I hear it.

Don Edwards recorded it on his somewhat recent CD My Hero Gene Autry, recorded live in 1997 at Gene Autry's 90th Birthday celebration.......Frank of Toledo.....I have the CD......

Thank you much, Kat, and you too Frank. I'm not really much of a Marty Robbins fan but I think I may buy that album just to learn the one song--won't be the first time I've done that, by any means.

Frank, I don't recognize the name Don Edwards. I'll go look him up; maybe I would like his voice better...?

Thanks again for all the effort, both of you.

Lin

Well, now that I've embarrassed myself with my ignorance, let me state that I definitely DO like Don Edwards, I can't believe I hadn't heard of him before since he does "my kind of music," and give a big THANK YOU to Francy for introducing me to him!

An order for his "My Hero Gene Autry" birthday CD is on it's way...

**bg** Lin, re' Don Edwards...I have an old cassette of his that I've almost worn out over the years. Not sure if I can get a CD copy out of it, even. I absolutely love his voice and songs and, another one I love is Rex Allen Jr. Even got to see him live and get an autograph! Old Marty was certainly prolific! Happy B-day!

Thanks Gene, email on its way. And you too, Kat. Rex Jr. has been at the Prairie Rose Ranch near here several times, but so far I've missed hearing him. Will have to try harder!
