Subject: BS: American Pie as Chevy Jingle From: Greg B Date: 18 May 07 - 11:46 AM Does anybody else appreciate the irony of Chevrolet's use of 'Miss American Pie' as their new advertising jingle? They get as far as 'drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry.' Then cycle through before they get to anything about 'good old boys.' Now, it seems to me that the dried-up levy is a mighty powerful metaphor for the demise of the world's biggest auto-maker. The song is really about the end of an era, a loss of innocence, and the rise of cynicism about all that was 'America' to a certain generation. I mean, don't they LISTEN to what they're putting out? |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: Greg B Date: 18 May 07 - 01:21 PM Gene was one of the guys drinking whisky and rye, being dry and all. They didn't know he was Jewish. He didn't look it, and apparently never mentioned that the Father was the only one he admired most. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: KB in Iowa Date: 18 May 07 - 01:55 PM Seriously, though, I don't think the people at ChevyTM or in the ad agency care what the song is really about. It's well known and mentions ChevyTM. Reminds me of "Born in the USA" becoming a patriotic anthem when it is really anything but. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: GUEST Date: 18 May 07 - 04:05 PM Should one be driving, drinking whisky (or and rye? Is it Canadian rye whisky? Eugene Levy is Canadian, ruling out the american pie thing, if they went to his house. This would be another pie. Maybe they stopped at dry, fearing a law suit from encouraging drinking and driving? |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: GUEST,Ed Date: 18 May 07 - 04:06 PM Maybe they refer to those McDonald's pies |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: Rapparee Date: 18 May 07 - 05:14 PM The levee was and I suppose still is a popular place for the "good old boys" to have a drink or six. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: Greg B Date: 18 May 07 - 05:46 PM ...even in a 'dry' county. (I've visited one 'dry' county. Was there for a week one night.) |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 May 07 - 08:17 PM After Hurricane Katrina, surely the very word "levee" has some rather unfortunate overtones. Death, dereliction of duty, general incompetence... |

Subject: RE: BS: American Pie as Jingle From: Desdemona Date: 19 May 07 - 08:30 PM It all brings to mind the late 80s (or maybe early 90s?) Metamucil commericial featuring Arlo Guthrie singing "The City of New Orleans"..."good mornin' America how are ya?" took on a whole new meaning for the baby boomer generation...! ~D |
