Hello all, pretty new to the game i have to say, an uncle has given me a copy of Andy Irvine and Paul Brady, this has had the effect of me receiving an enormous flashback to my grannys house listening to a tape of stocktons wing, there was quite a bit of bodhran in the tape, but i would like to know about their early catalouge and anything that anyone can recommended in the same vain.

Feel like ive been away too long :(

Stocktons Wing were more than a bit good. Saw them at Wythenshawe Labour Clun around '81. The demon Chris Cole of Gorton tank / Gorton Morrismen was introducing me to "A Dogs Nose" at the time: a pint of bitter with a gin in the top! What a night.

They were originally pulled together after several of them had placed first at the '77 Fleadh in Ennis.   Their banjo player, Kieran Hanrahan, is the host of the long-running RTE Radio Show - Céilí House.

The last time my wife and I ventured up to Chicago for a few gigs, I took note that their champion fiddler, Maurice Lennon, was performing semi-regularly in the City of Big Shoulders - I assume he lives there now.   (I'd like to get up to hear him.)

I really admired the singer - I think Callaghan is his name.

Sorry I didn't get to the pavilions to see them compete at the Fleadh - there was too much drink on me, I'm afraid.   I did manage to have the sight of the barman split into two and then merge back again.   Seeing double - not bad for the novitiate that I was at the time.

I first saw them live at the first Lisdoonvarna festival in 1978.

The first singer was Tony Callinan. Tommy Hayes was the Bodhrán player and Paul Roche played Flute. The others are mentioned above. Their first album called "Stockton's Wing" was released on Mulligan in Ireland about 1978. I have it on vinyl, I presume it came out on CD at some stage.

The line-up changed in about '81 when Mike Hanrahan (Kieran's Brother) joined the band, and Steve Cooney from Australia joined on Bass and Didjeridoo - a first for an Irish band I think). Classic Album from that time was called A light in the Western sky. Steve left after a while - he later re-emerged as an innovative guitar backer to Seamus Begley among others.

From then on the band went off in a different direction - sort of pop with a bit of trad thrown into the middle of the song somewhere.

But they were great in the beginning.

By the way Danny C. I was wandering around Ennis in a similar state in 1977. We may well have bumped into each other. Not literally, I hope!

I believe there was a second album, before "Light in the Western Sky", called "Take a Chance" (I know there was such an album - I own a copy. I'm just not 100% sure that it was their second album.) If you liked the first album, I believe you would also enjoy "Take a Chance".

Declan, I remember finding a very sturdy wall in a place called Costello's (or something like that). Seated nearby there were a dozen and a half mostly white haired men - all faced in the same direction - playing the most gorgeous music I had ever heard. A fellow punter-on-the-wall informed me that they were from West Clare.

It was very different from the Irish music I had heard growing up in Phila. I remember thinking (ex-altarboy that I wuz), "So this is ceol. The word must derive from the same root as the Latin word for heaven."

On a whole I am certain I was making every effort to not bump into people and things, but I cannot warrant the results.

Yes it was Tara Records rather than Mulligan. And Tony spells his surname Callanan. I should check these things before posting.

Don C. I've heard a lot of West Clare music on that and many more visits to Clare since those days. Sounds like you wer in a good place.

Stocktons Wing       Stocktons Wing       Tara       2004
was also put out on cassette. We picked it up in our travels in 1990, for just under three pound. Lots of reels, 3 jigs, 3 songs and a mazurka.

I was in Ennis in 1977 too, and actually saw the formation of that band over that week-end, although I didn't know it at the time. There was one of the best sessions I've ever witnessed on the Saturday night outside, I think, "The Old Ground" Hotel. Maurice Lennon, Denis Ryan, who had been 3rd in the Senior fiddle, plus Frankie Kennedy, Mairead Mhaionigh and various others from Belfast. Maurice Lennon played Martin Mulhaire's great reel "Mahoney's Fancy" as a solo, and in 30 years of listening to Irish music since, I've never heard it equalled.
There's a copy of the first "Stockton's Wing" LP up on ebay at the moment, but you've only got 5 hours. It's got 1 bid - £2.99, plus p&p of £2.50, and it's not mine. Good luck, if you bid.
