Thanks Dave

the quays of Salford sounds like a title for a song, or has that been done?

'Flowers' is a very catchy tune and the lyrics scan extemely well. The poignancy of the last verse is subliminally subtle !

Shame it didnt even get placed at the BMSWC of 2007, but the winners were also high quality songs

Fab song! Can I steal it please?

Rhiannon

P.S. Martyn Wyndham-Read sings a song with the same title. It's made up of the names of wild flowers and he reckoned it was his senility test. Sadly, when I was at his place last year I asked him to sing it and he couldn't remember it! Hmmm

Hi Zany Mouse - yes of course sing it, that's the whole idea!

It would be nice if you credit the author obviously

Need any help with the chords?

shame about the clash of titles though, a bit late to do anything about it

on secong thoughts, sent an email to Martyn to see if he minds; I could change title to "Of all the flowers of England" - probably the name of an obscure Elvis number or what?

I'm fairly certain that Martyn didn't write the song. I seem to remember it was written by a woman who wanted to preserve the names of the old flowers.

You can email him direct. I won't put his email address here (because of attracting spam) but if you look him up on your search engine, you will get his address.

As to singing your beautiful song - of course I will credit you. And thank you for letting me sing it.

Chords? Erm, have you forgotten I'm with Mick Pearce? Or were you just being sarky?

Rhiannon

Guest Pat1937, have you tried doing a search within the Digitrad lyrics section (box at top of page)? Or you could try the 'Old Adv Forum search' which is in the 'Quicklinks' drop-down.

Re. Flowers of England, thanks for this song Fleggy! I've sung it out quite a few times now & have had lots of positive feedback about it & people just love the chorus. As a matter of interest Martin Wyndham-Read was at a pub where I sang it a few months ago & he asked me about it afterwards. He really enjoyed it & remembered you well. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes it up himself!

Re the Mar Wynd R Flowers song- I think it's by Sylvia Watts, who also wrote The Seasons Of The Year, the one which begins with Lambs born in the snow. Lovely lady, very modest about her songs whci are high-quality, full of memorable phrases...

Guest Pat1937 - I don't know the Rose of England you're looking for, but the "breathing England's air" line is from Rupert Brooke's "The Soldier", which includes in the same verse "her flowers to love".

The poem was familiar to most people between 1915 and the late 30s.

Guest Pat1937 - click here: Rose of England.
Music by Ivor Novello from "Crest of the Wave". Words by Christopher Hassall

Well, Snuffy - I'm definitely losing it! I thought I knew Novello/Hassal's "Rose of England" and didn't bother to check the words. I still don't remember singing that line.

Another example of intentional or subconscious quoting from other writers. In this case, probably the former - Hassall wrote a good biography of Rupert Brooke.
