Subject: Colum Sands gig From: HipflaskAndy Date: 20 Apr 07 - 10:47 AM Late info I know - but I'm a late addition to the bill - and no harm in advertising, eh? Colum Sands, with support from Duncan McFarlane & Anne Brivonese Parochial Hall, Batley, Come off A652 at Stocks Lane (Con Club side) right onto Blakeridge Lane, right onto Thomas St and left onto Melton Street, bingo! That's the directions we've got, anyway! Starts 8.30pm, admission £9 - but bear in mind... Colum does a 45 and a 50 min set, support - two 20 min sets Cheers - D |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: GUEST,nickr90 Date: 20 Apr 07 - 01:28 PM Colum Sands as support? This man is a worthy headline act. He has great songs, good line of chat and a magical personality. Go along and pay the price just for him then you get the headline act for free. Lucky you! Nicky Rossiter |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: PoppaGator Date: 20 Apr 07 - 02:03 PM I am barely lioterate in Brit Folk-Speak, but it's clear enough to me that Colum is the headliner, plyaing two longish sets, while Duncan and Anne are "support," with two 20 minute sets (one set each, perhaps?) Maybe the confusion comes from Colum/Andy writing "I'm a late addition to the bill..." Perhaps it would be more accurate to characterize his appearance as a last-minute replaceme4tn from some other headliner. I'm guessing... |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Apr 07 - 05:43 PM Colum Sands - I've seen his gig. Do you think he took his name from a place though? It sound like he might have done. |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Jeanie Date: 20 Apr 07 - 06:50 PM Batley - that's Oop Noorth, in't it ? Colum Sands shifting Dahn Sarf to Essex after this gig to be at Colchester Folk Club, Arts Centre, on Monday. They've been playing his CD in the interval there over the past few weeks - he sounds very good. Looking forward to it. I thought the same about the place, weelittledrummer - I've been meaning to look up where it is. It sounds like the sort of place people go to for geography field trips, wearing cagoules.... - jeanie |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Apr 07 - 06:57 PM Yeh he's he good in a very inoffensive Val Doonican sort of way. Nothing to upset your grandma! |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: GUEST,nickr90 Date: 21 Apr 07 - 05:41 AM Colum Sands is his real name. He is one of the highly talented SAnds Family group who were extremely popular since the 1970s. His brothers Ben and Tommy are possibly more well-known but Colum is every bit as good. I would ask you to try to forget that comparison to Val Doonican. He has wit, lyricism, patter and humour but he can also do sharp lyrics. |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Susanne (skw) Date: 21 Apr 07 - 07:48 PM Anne is back with them. The family (Anne, Tommy, Ben and Colum) go on tour about once a year, at other times the boys tour separately. Recently Tommy has taken to touring with his children, Moya (great voice) and Fionan (great instrumentalist) and introducing his autobiography, Songman. Any of the above is good value for money, but I'd rate Colum top of the list. Not out to offend anyone, for sure, but certainly out to make you think in a quiet but very determined way! |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Apr 07 - 02:42 AM Ah! thinking......not keen on that! However despite the disruption of my thought patterns - I thought his act very enjoyable, and he's musically very talented. |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Mick Tems Date: 22 Apr 07 - 08:12 AM Here's the review in this weekend's Llantrisant Folk Club newsletter, after Colum's successful gig on Wednesday, April 18: Colum Sands comes from border country, near Newry, County Down; there was an air of expectancy before Wednesday's gig, as if the audience was welcoming an old friend. The curious thing is that Colum has only played here once, and that was two years ago - but he made such an impression with his wry humour and his quietly intelligent songs that hit the nail sharply on the head. Colum's like a neighbour you'd invite into your kitchen, who'd repay your offer with warmth and satisfaction, leaving you with the distinct impression of an evening well spent. Colum sings of the life, times and rigours living in a rural community in the north of Ireland; whenever a question or problem raises its ugly head, he pokes gentle fun at it, and his songs have incredible strength in them. He sings of The Man With A Cap and Looking The Loan Of A Spade – and when Colum started Almost Every Circumstance, the audience joined in the chorus as if they were familiar with it; quite remarkable! Colum's a smashing songwriter, and he's an amazing guy, too. I urge you to see and hear him; I confidently predict that you will be pleasantly surprised. Star rating: ***** (MT) |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: Jeanie Date: 24 Apr 07 - 09:55 AM Heard him at Colchester Folk Club last night and he certainly lived up to all the good things people have been saying here. A thoroughly enjoyable evening: great songs, and, as Dame Pattie says, what a lovely person ! This was his last gig on this tour - he was going back to Ireland today. Do go and hear him if he is ever around your way - well worth it. - jeanie |

Subject: RE: Colum Sands gig From: HipflaskAndy Date: 25 Apr 07 - 03:57 AM Don't really see how any confusion came about up there? 'cept mebbe my Mudcat 'handle' - But I clearly state it's Colum 'with support from...' Then the fact I stated 'I' am a late addition to the bill... ...and sign off as 'D' ...having named 'Duncan McFarlane' in the text. I then say Colum is doing two lengthy 40/45 min sets and the support only two 20 min sets. I know the venue struggles at times to draw folks in - hadn't seen any ads for it myself. So on being asked (eleventh hour) to do a support as the person booked to do sit (originally) had unfortunately had to pull out... I thought I'd try and help the situation wi' a bit o' plugging of what was, essentially, a Colum Sands gig (hence thread title) on this forum. Subsequently misunderstood.... ah well. Colum was just grand - a fine headline act. Twas a pleasure to be there. All the very best - D (Duncan McFarlane - frequent mudcat poster, invariably under the log-on-member-name of HipflaskAndy) |
