Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Peace Date: 13 Apr 07 - 01:03 PM King Arthur himself is interesting, because the only direct mention of him occurs in "The Mabinogian." |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Desdemona Date: 13 Apr 07 - 01:59 PM Yes, my geeky medievalist chums are ever on the lookout for Arthurian-related, well, CRAP. I thought the juxtaposition of the Once and Future King with the Once--and Future? You never can tell when it comes to sequels--Captain was...illuminating? Thought-provoking? Totally random? Other? ~D |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Apr 07 - 02:15 PM Having memorized the first Star Trek series when I was a kid, it is amusing to see the clips in this new and clever context. It reinforces what we all know--that music is everything. The sound track will make or break a film. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Bill D Date: 28 Aug 19 - 01:14 PM It is still 'interesting'.... and it reflects my basic opinion of Star Trek after Harlan Ellison opted out. I have been a science-fiction fan for 65 years or so, and while some stories and themes can take whimsical liberties with the science aspect, I have always most enjoyed 'hard' science and serious themes, even though they must involve speculative & subjective projections about both the universe and the mind. (I enjoyed the Darkover books by Marion Zimmer Bradley despite the obvious leaps of faith about genetics and space travel, because the series explored both personal & cultural questions.) Ellison hoped that Star Trek would do that, and he hoped to be a part of it on a made-for-TV series.... but his personality just wouldn't tolerate TV's inevitable 'processing' with the *theme processor* set on 'puree'. This article, written at Ellison's death, lays out the story of his feud with Gene Roddenberry and the way credits were given. I didn't have any idea of this at the time.... I just know that after trying to follow the series for 2-3 years, I just couldn't take any more giant, white-haired 'aliens' that looked human appearing in the screens to challenge the ship... and Kirk's over-acting...etc. So... the clip above tickles me, just because it IS a silly parody. If they had done the whole series like a Monty Python or Blackadder, I'd have had fun with it... but when it pretended to be serious, it seldom avoided trite, dumbed-down writing and re-cycled, cookie-cutter ideas. Very few TV or movie sci-fi productions have since come close to my... admittedly high... standards. I understand why... but... *sigh* |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Jeri Date: 28 Aug 19 - 01:25 PM Bill, it only lasted 3 seasons, so I don't know what you opted out of. The thread, however, has gone on for 12 years. Babylon 5 was the best, IMO. |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Anne Lister Date: 28 Aug 19 - 05:23 PM What was that comment from 2007 that the only direct mention of King Arthur was in the "Mabinogian" (sic)? Not exactly an informed statement, I'm afraid. The Mabinogion does include mentions of Arthur, as do many earlier narratives in Latin, French, Occitan, German and Italian. [I'm now available for lectures, talks, heated conversations and other sessions in which I could talk your ears numb, by the way] |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: robomatic Date: 28 Aug 19 - 06:18 PM Without further ado, a plug for "Firefly" which was everything "Star Wars" could have been but wasn't. As for Star Trek, I didn't appreciate it enough when TOS was 'Original' but I made up for that later. There was a fun documentary about Ellison: "Dreams With Sharp Teeth" |

Subject: RE: BS: Captain Kirk Meets King Arthur From: Bill D Date: 29 Aug 19 - 10:50 AM Jeri... maybe it was in the 2nd year... but maybe I mis-remember whether it was during the 1st run, or the many re-runs. I moved several times back then, and didn't always have a TV. I also 'sampled' the new series and found slightly better acting, but a similar dearth of really creative writing. I did appreciate Ellison's series of articles called "The Glass Teat", later compiled into 2 books. I wished for years that someone would make a movie of Roger Zelazny's beautiful "A Rose for Ecclesiastes".... but I doubt he would ever have allowed Hollywood to get their hands on it. It was just the right length for a film.... |
