Easter in Glossop was enlivened by a fire which was deliberately started in a block of luxury flats, a few hundred years from the regular sessions at the "Globe". See BBC Website or Manchester Evening News site for details.

The details from the local rumour service are that a man living in a flat on the top floor argued with his girlfriend late on Friday night, and set his flat on fire. The Fire Brigade attended and put the fire out. When they had left, the man returned, disabled the sprinklers and started the fire again. He has been charged with Arson, with intent to endanger life. The Fire Brigade had to return four times over Saturday. Every time they left, the fire broke out again in the roof, and had to be put out again.

85 flats have been "damaged". In fact, most have been utterly ruined, along with contents. Only half were occupied, but plenty of occupants were scrounging free T-shirts or other clothing from a pub, the "Corner Cupboard", up the road.

The building has suffered plenty of mishaps over the years. It was originally part of a large cotton mill complex, which was unoccupied or used for storing raw materials by a local flooring products firm in the 1990s. Vandals set the unoccupied part of the mill on fire in 1995. It was completely destroyed, and there was widespread damage to other property; all the houses on Glossop's High Street needed repointing and several needed re-roofing. (And enough blazing bits drifted over to melt my car's windscreen wipers). The surviving half of the mill was converted into flats, with shops on the ground floor only a year ago. Four months ago, a water main burst, and flooded some of the flats and ground floor shops.

The mill is intact, but uninhabitable. It will need as much spending on it to restore it as was originally spent to convert it. It is a "Grade II listed building", which means that the owners will not be allowed simply to abandon it to decay. Because so many occupants are now in temporary accomodation with all their goods destroyed, joked in the "Globe" about the locally-brewed bitter's "unique smoky flavour" did not go down well.

Incidentally, I am not affected, but currently unable to play; I occasionally work behind the bar at the "Globe". Some nights ago, I got some broken glass behind a thumbnail, and will be unable to grip the neck of a guitar for a few days.

..and also:
A fire has destroyed the Tennessee lakeside home of the late country singer Johnny Cash, leaving little more than brick chimneys and the steel frame.

Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, lived at the house from the late 1960s until their deaths in 2003.

One firefighter was slightly hurt tackling the blaze at the house in Hendersonville, which is now owned by former Bee Gees star Barry Gibb.

Neighbour and country singer Marty Stuart, who was married to Cash's daughter Cindy in the 1980s, said: "So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house - everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.

"It was a sanctuary and a fortress for him."

The property was purchased by Barry Gibb in January last year. Gibb and his wife, Linda, had said they planned to restore the home on Old Hickory Lake and hoped to write songs there.

They had not yet moved in to the home, which they bought for a reported 2.3 million US dollars (£1.2 million).

Gibb's spokesman, Paul Bloch, said the singer and his family are "both saddened and devastated by the news".[AOL NEWS]
