I received a link to this site today from the PRS- Performing Rights Society.
Folk music is a vanishingly small proportion of recorded music. I'm a little surprised by the relative sizes of the other sectors too. I have been observing for some time that it is odd that Pop Music is so unpopular. Maybe it's the definition they use though- I'm still trying to live down the fact that my CD is listed as Pop on iTunes!
Have a look here
CD sales figures
Cheers
Dave

iTunes lists all sorts of things under designations that make no sense. I think one of my Red Clay Ramblers CD's came up as "pop". Not even "bluegrass" or "folk", but "pop". Actually, it made me laugh.

I also looked up three albums by the same Cajun band and one came up as folk, one as country, and one as World. What the Hell?

Interesting figures?

M. Manroe - had a 35-22-34

Mae West - had an nearly identical 36-22-36

Fascinating corrsets and girdles figures from Brazilian sites.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

The UK does seem to deserve a portion of its own in this forum. After all there would not be American Folk if the ballad genius had not sprung forth the leniade of the Lion-Hearted. Anything the American claim as folk, blues, or trad crossed the Atlantic and sprung forth anew in vigin, fertile soil.

Anything the American claim as folk, blues, or trad crossed the Atlantic and sprung forth anew in vigin, fertile soil. Except of course those "trad & folk" songs from the indigenous peoples of the Americas!
