I was in a studio the other day and every time I put a capo on the guitar I had to re-tune some of the strings (especially the bass) is this normal? I am using a McIlroy AJ25 with Elixir medium strings tuned to DADGAD.

Thicker strings distort more using a capo. Remember you are pushing them down hard over a metal object [the fret], they're bound to suffer from that. Try reducing the force of you capo to the lightest that will hold the strings in place, less force = less distortion.

More importantly what sort of capo are you using. Is it a Kyser? They put a lot of pressure on the strings. With the Shubb & G7 you can adjust the pressure. Yes very normal always retune after placing a capo. Especially if recording.

Hi
I'm using a Kyser - good for one handed changing in session - I'll try a shubb for recording - I may also try lighter string for the studio work - I play a Martin in sessions with the med strings.

Hi -

In addition to the above, I'll point out that it will vary according to the guitar - fret height possible being a variable. I think perhaps playing style may matter too.

You will have worse problems when the sting is looser (Dropped D or DADGAD) - A luthier explained this to me once: he got all techie on me but in short it has to do with the tensile force across the string and the point at which you are putting pressure on it.

On 2 of my guitars, I always put on a heavier than [my] normal bass string for playing DADGAD as this seems to alleviate the problem for me considerably.

Do you put heavier stings on all round out just those dropped?

Would you rather have an out of tune recording which is there forever?
It's only a pain in the donkey at live gigs, where lots of musicians continually retune anyhow.
