Subject: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: wilco Date: 27 Mar 07 - 09:30 AM I have a small acoustic music store in east Tennessee in USA. It's in a little community, Red Bank, near Chattanooga. The metropolitan area has about 400,000 people. I sell instruments and supplies, give lessons, and provide a "musicians' hangout." I don't push many CDS or tapes. The area is mixed, with homes and businesses, and I have many neighborhood "regulars." I wonder if there ever were neighborhood music stores, like there were once neighborhood restaurants, hardware stores, small groceries, butchers, etc.?? If so, i wonder how they survived financuially? What did they stock? |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Sorcha Date: 27 Mar 07 - 09:35 AM Oh ho....in Wyoming they made the business go on large appliances. Our local 'music store' was primarily washers, dryers, fridges, etc. The fella who ran it was NOT a muso. He never did understand why my mom couldn't just use a guitar G string on her viola....... |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Big Mick Date: 27 Mar 07 - 10:22 AM Absolutely. In my neighborhood it was Farrell's Music. On any given day, it was a regular stop for me. Large part of my growing up, and I can still see it in my mind's eye. Located in the little residential area of Wyoming, MI, USA known as Home Acres. The store is still there but not owned by old Bill Farrell anymore. Thanks for the memory, Mick |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: GUEST,Jim Date: 27 Mar 07 - 10:36 AM In Cobourg, Ontario it was Jim's Music and Variety Store on Elgin Street. You could get a popsicle, a quart of milk and try out a Martin guitar. I bought my first banjo there. Jim himself was a fiddle and button accordion player, though he could play a tune on most any instrument in the store. He was always ready to pick a few tunes with anyone who came in. He was also an HO guage model railroader and there were always a few RR cars on display in the store. Jim's licence plates read EADG. |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: wilco Date: 27 Mar 07 - 09:28 PM I understand that many furniture stores still sell music instruments, in small town USA. Anyone know of or remember any of them? |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Sorcha Date: 27 Mar 07 - 09:39 PM Not furniture but the one in Winfield, KS was also a Radio Shack for many years. Don't think Winfield even has a music store anymore. |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Big Mick Date: 27 Mar 07 - 10:22 PM Hastings, Michigan, USA has an appliance store that sells music kit, strings, tuners, etc. There are a lot of old timey players in the area so mando strings, fiddle strings, and guitar strings are available. I have actually found gauges for my bouzouki that I couldn't get at the Guitar Center type of store. Mick |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Padre Date: 27 Mar 07 - 10:36 PM When I was young!, the local music store was Galperin's, on Capital Street. The store had two floors - on the bottom was the band instrument, sheet music and piano department, with practice rooms in the back for those taking lessons. Upstairs was the guitar section, and the record department, where there were rooms that you could use to listen to 45s (reference to mid-20th century technology inserted here)before buying them. Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: Leadfingers Date: 28 Mar 07 - 09:13 AM High Wycombe , Bucks , UK still has a music shop in the same place that Percy Prior had HIS shop , though its part of a chain now ! back in 'the Good Old Days' there were a pair of Brothers who worked in the shop and ran a local band . It was a regular hangout on a Saturday for musicians of all persuasions , who would chew the fat re Gigs and Gossip , and 'borrow' intruments from |display for a Jam Session . The manager loved it , as it showed that the instruments were at least playable ! |

Subject: RE: Neighborhood Music Store????? From: wilco Date: 28 Mar 07 - 02:07 PM Jim Lad: Interesting question. I'm doing a little hitorical research; but, all of this is inspirational. Gradually, the reality of everyday life in previous generations disappears. I'm curious about how the music business operated, prior to the modern era. Wilco |
