Subject: Ry Cooder: My Name Is Buddy From: GUEST Date: 24 Mar 07 - 11:43 AM I've been listening non-stop to "My Name Is Buddy," the new CD by Ry Cooder. Easily my favorite CD of 2007 so far. It's a folk album in the Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger mode. In fact, Pete Seeger plays banjo on it. Other backup musicians include Mike Seeger and Flaco Jimenez. |

Subject: RE: Ry Cooder: My Name Is Buddy From: dwditty Date: 25 Mar 07 - 02:26 AM Thanks. FYI, I found a few Ry Cooder DVDs - Grey Whistle (1974) and others. Well worth having if you are a Ry fan. dw. MichaelR, in my opinion, Ry does not have a pretty voice, but he sure can sing. But then I guess I am drawn to performers who put tons of feeling into whatever voice they have...hmmm...Dylan, Van Ronk, Rev Gary Davis, David Bromberg....sure are alot of them...but here is the kicker...I can even dig Joseph Spence (a major Ry influence) : ). |

Subject: RE: Ry Cooder: My Name Is Buddy From: michaelr Date: 25 Mar 07 - 04:47 PM dwditty -- I like all the singers you listed (having heard only one Joseph Spence song, "Santa Claus is coming to town" which makes me chortle). I dunno, Ry's voice just grates on me, especially when I think of those great vocalists he had on "Bop til you Drop". To each his own, I guess. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: Ry Cooder: My Name Is Buddy From: iancarterb Date: 25 Mar 07 - 09:47 PM I don't suppose this will move forward my nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize for Ry for Buena Vista Social Club, but the thread has reminded me to go out and buy the new one- he did a long and elegant interview on NPR at the release date of this album. Don't know what all this squawking is about regarding Ry's singing voice ... he sounds alright to me, always has and always will. "Back in the days of world war II Fought against the Japanese like me and you Everybody's worried 'bout world war III Okinawa's just the place where I'm gonna be Going back to Okinawa Sorry, but I can't take you Never coming back no more, baby" biLL |
