She Who Must Be Obeyed is looking for the complete lyrics to a Frank Sinatra song entitled WITHOUT A SONG. Her father used to sing it on camping trips. Now, I've found some lyrics on the Web but they don't have the verse. That's verse in Tin Pan Alley style, as in intro, not as in a ballad or folksong. Anyone out there in Mudcat Land who can give me a clue?

Never had a penny in my pocket,
Never had a nickel in my jeans..................

Song was written by Billy Rose for a play in 1929(at least that was the copyright date).

Hullo, Mark. Without a Song has been posted here before, but here are corrected lyrics, from Gottlieb and Kimball's Reading Lyrics

Without A Song
(lyrics by Edward Eliscu with Billy Rose, music by Vincent Youmans, 1929)

Without a song, the day would never end;
Without a song, the road would never bend;
When things go wrong, a man ain't got a friend.
Without a song.
That field of corn would never see a plow;
That field of corn would be deserted now;
A darky's born, but he's no good nohow.
Without a song.

I got my trouble and woe,
But sure as I know the Jordan will roll.
I'll get along as long as a song
Is strong in my soul.

I'll never know what makes the rain to fall;
I'll never know what makes the grass so tall;
I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song.

from the Broadway musical, Great Day!

(I think I'd substitute "a man is born" for "a darky's born")
I found a copy of the 1941 Sinatra-Tommy Dorsey recording on American Songbook Series: Vincent Youmans, from the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings. The notes say that interpretations of this song are often "inflated and pretentious," but that Sinatra "succeeds in highlighting the lovely melody without bombast." Further, it says, "The recording is marred only by the preposterous and offensive "darky" reference in the lyrics, usually changed to 'fellow' or 'man' as in the case of he Supremes (!) 1966 recording."

I've always loved this song, but I don't sing it because I haven't been able to make it "work" for me.

I have 2 different recordings of Frank Sinatra singing WITHOUT A SONG, and neither one have the lyrics you mentioned.

WITHOUT A SONG
Frank Sinatra

Without a song,
The day would never end.
Without a song,
The road would never bend.
When things go wrong,
Man ain't got a friend
Without a song.

That field of corn
Would never see a plow.
That field of corn
Would be deserted now.
Man is born,
But he's no good nohow,
Without a song.

I've got my trouble and woe,
But sure as I know
The Jordan will roll,
And I'll get along
As long as a song's
Sung in my soul.

I'll never know
What makes that rain to fall.
I'll never know
What makes the grass so tall.
I only know
There ain't no love at all
Without a song.

I've got my trouble and woe,
And sure as I know
The Jordan will roll,
And I'll get along
As long as a song
Is sung in my soul.

I'll never know
What makes that rain to fall.
I'll never know
What makes the grass grow tall.
I only know
There ain't no love at all
Without a song.
