Subject: Lyr Add: Broken Rainbows (original composition) From: retrancer Date: 18 Feb 07 - 09:23 AM BROKEN RAINBOWS (Jason Oliver ASCAP) (C Am F, G) There's a box of broken rainbows I keep inside my heart Where I put the pieces of the dreams that fall apart. This one's slightly tarnished, and this ones sort of blue In a way they're all the same 'cause none of them came true There's a box of broken rainbows, deep inside my head They cut me when I play with them and tear my heart to shreds This one's sharp and jagged, and this one like a knife Be careful what you wish for, a broken dream can take your life This ones sort of rusty, I guess it's pretty old This one is what would have been if I'd done what I was told This one's like a mirror, but if I hold it up you see There is no reflection because there's nothing left of me (Break, repeat chord progression no lyrics) (Resume) The box is pretty heavy now, it really brings me down That's why I only take it out when nobody's around It's getting pretty full now, I guess that means I'm grown And now that I've stopped dreaming, maybe it won't overflow I've got a box of broken rainbows, perhaps you'd like to see How all the dreams that never were are all that's left of me A box of broken rainbows, perhaps you'd like to see 'Cause a box of broken rainbows, is all I'll ever be |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Broken Rainbows (original composition) From: Azizi Date: 18 Feb 07 - 10:24 AM jstarwolf, since I'm not a musician, I can't comment on the musicality of your lyrics. But I hope that you really don't mean these words: "This ones sort of rusty, I guess it's pretty old This one is what would have been if I'd done what I was told This one's like a mirror, but if I hold it up you see There is no reflection because there's nothing left of me" -snip- and these words " A box of broken rainbows, perhaps you'd like to see 'Cause a box of broken rainbows, is all I'll ever be" -snip- If so, that's awfully sad. No matter how great the music might be, I'm not sure that I would want to sing or hear a song that is so defeatist. I'm not a pollyanna, but I do prefer some element of hope [if not faith in the future] in the songs I listen to or the songs I sing. Just my 2 cents... Best wishes, Azizi |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Broken Rainbows (original composition From: Jeri Date: 18 Feb 07 - 10:43 AM I'd sort of want to hear the tune, but my first and biggest reaction to the song is that the broken rainbows aren't the problem. The problem is that the subject of the song is keeping what he considers his failures around to remind him. I wanted an epiphany in the end. I started one that I never finished, but it ended like this: A dream dies when another takes its place Some aren't meant to last They give you strength to chase your future Not be faithful to your past I'm a different man than I was back then My dreams are different too Some follow where love leads That's what I tried to do I want to hear that the guy cleaned house and tossed the box out. I don't much like it when people tell you or me what song we should (their song, theycan write it!) have written. This is just my first impression and my own opinion, but I usually don't choose to listen to songs which share only misery with me. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Broken Rainbows (original composition From: retrancer Date: 18 Feb 07 - 10:55 AM thanks for the feedback - i did have a final verse about tossing the box out - he (i) actually takes the box outside and sets the rainbows free in that verse, but i'm not there yet. I wrote this as we learned my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sometimes there is no hope. feel free to listen this (and other "songs to hang yourself to") LOL I can laugh at myself at http://www.geocities.com/retrancer |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Broken Rainbows (original composition) From: Bob the Postman Date: 18 Feb 07 - 11:18 AM It's a fine lyric. Sometimes a heart is broken and that's what this song is about. No happy ending needed--that's a different song. But when that other song does come along, be damn sure to write it down. I'm very sorry for your trouble. I hope and believe you will find strength and consolation in the same place where you found the song. Can you make a link to your geocities page? I tried googling the above URL but the engine said no such. |
