Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us! From: jeffp Date: 06 Feb 07 - 11:20 PM No, it's Laine. I honestly didn't know he was still alive until he was dead. Now there's a weird statement. I remember when I was growing up we had a couple of his albums. I really enjoyed his music. He was most famous for Rawhide, I suppose. He did a bunch of good cowboy music. Cool Water, Deuces Wild, Dead Man's Hand. Farewell, Frankie. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us! From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 06 Feb 07 - 11:30 PM Don't forget High Noon, Cry of the Wild Goose, Lucky Old Sun and my personal favorite, I Believe. Frankie Laine appeared on the recent PBS fund raiser of 50s music, a bit unkempt, but reasonably good pipes for a guy in his nineties. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us! From: Wordsmith Date: 07 Feb 07 - 01:44 AM Sad, but I, too, thought he was already dead. Am I mistaken in thinking he also sang They Called the Wind, Mariah? I know John Raitt did. I'd forgotten a lot of those songs, too. Nice to remember them now, though. He had a long run. Rest peacefully! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us!-Feb 2007 From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 07 Feb 07 - 06:43 PM The Cry of The Wild Goose was written and recorded by Terry Gilkyson---Laine had the big hit on it. WHen I interviewed Eliza Gilkyson she mentioned how, as a little girl, she hated that version---so I sent it to her as part of the recorded interview. She loved it for nostalgia's sake and thanked me for it. Frankly---I liked it. As well as Mule Train and all the others---though I did like Tex Ritter's version of High Noon more. Do you also recall---Jezebel and Rose Rose I Love You. He also did some interesting covers of Hank Williams along w/ Put Your Hand in The Hand, in the Cool of the Evening---and so many more. Anyone remember his duets with Jo Stafford? Long fruitful life----good for him Bill Hahn |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us!-Feb 2007 From: Wordsmith Date: 08 Feb 07 - 02:09 AM I read an obit yesterday from the LA Times, by Claudia Luther, who said that the program director of WINS, where Frankie got a job for $5 an hour singing on a live 1/2 hour show, changed his name to Frankie Lane. Lane later added the "i" to his last name to avoid confusion with another singer. As part of the background information, she wrote that At 18, with the Depression under way, Laine became a dance marathoner and was in 14 marathons, winning 3 times. He and his partner, Ruthie Smith, made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for dancing 145 days straight (although he claimed it was 146.) That's My Desire was his breakthrough song. During 1947 it got even more air play especially in Europe and by fall, he got his first royalty payment for the song: $36,000. He was 34. He could've borrowed Tony Bennett's "Rags to Riches." |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us!-Feb 2007 From: melodeonboy Date: 08 Feb 07 - 08:58 AM His voice, like no other, always brings to mind clean, well-dressed, clean-shaven "cowpokes" with rock 'n' roll haircuts astride well-groomed horses, prancing along through the desert, sometimes accompanied by hundreds of cattle, and occasionally fighting off "Injuns"!. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frankie Laine is no longer with us!-Feb 2007 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Feb 07 - 06:44 PM He did some good jazz also, but once the popular songs made the charts his jazz singing was ignored. I was surprised to hear a clip of some of his early work, it was a lot different, but good. SRS |
