Subject: Tune Add: CONFESSE, HIS TUNE
From: Mitch the Bass

Fidjit,

It's an unusual dance in that it's for six people, two triplets, each triplet being a man and two women.

A quadrille is for 4 couples arranged in a square and is a much later dance for than this.

The tune published by Playford is a jig. It has two parts, A and B. The A part is 4 bars repeated so 8 bars in total. The B part is 8 bars repeated so 16 bars in total.

The tune in ABC notation is -

X: 1
T:Confesse, his tune
M:6/8
L:1/8
Q:105
R:Jig
K:GAeol

Thanks Howard. So a 32 bar Jig would do it perhaps?

Now what about that 6/8 Blackberry Quadrille you have on your page?

Chas,

There's no reason why you shouldn't use Blackberry Quadrille but you'll need to play it as a 24 bar jig, just 1 A music and then 2 Bs. The A music is almost 4 bars repeated so it matches the form of the original tune.

The original tune is in a minor key and is usually played a little slower than you might play Blackberry Qudadrille. This might change the character of the dance but putting your own interpretation on the dance is all part of the game.

Howard

Thanks again Howard.

I'd just noticed the 4 bars part and thought it might go. Will let you know how we get on.

Chas

PS. This is for a Swedish dance group that I'm teaching English Country Dances to. They keep finding something challenging.

Found the actual notation

here

Just go to the "pdf" link and scroll down.

Bloody thing is in Gm though. Not keen on Gm. Concertina or guitar.

Ah well get the fiddlers on to it.

Case solved.

Chas
