Subject: Musical preferences of pets From: Alec Date: 04 Feb 07 - 02:25 AM We have 2 cats, one of whom (called Henley) has developed a marked liking for hearing "When the Saints go Marching in" played on the Harmonica. When I am practising,he will come in and excitedly "request" this tune & becomes very demonstrative when I play it.He has no interest in any other melody or any other instrument(though he did once seem to be genuinely enjoying listening to a Nat King Cole C.D.) Our other cat (Kiwi) has been known to glance covetously at the Ukulele case as if thinking it might make an interesting bed. Above & beyond this he shows no interest in music whatsoever. I was wondering if anybody else has pets who show a liking for a particular tune or instrument? |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: eddie1 Date: 04 Feb 07 - 04:21 AM Way back I knew a German Shepherd Dog who was an expert at mountain rescue. He used to sit down and join in vocally in a kind of keening mode with anything involving a harmonica. I've heard it said that dogs find the harmonics (is that why they're called harmonicas?) painful but he had every opportunity to go away. Sadly he was killed by an avalanche while taking part in a rescue. Can't hear a harmonica now without remembering him. Eddie |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Feb 07 - 06:11 AM Our cats will quite happily sit through all manner of music on the stereo, from Mozart to Meatloaf, via Bach and Black Sabbath; they don't mind when I play the recorder (except the really tiny one, but that's like a dog whistle) but as soon as Manitas get a melodeon out, the catflap is swinging like a Yorkshire villager. Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: GUEST,banjoman Date: 04 Feb 07 - 08:09 AM Not surprised that any pet hates the sound of melodeons - they are in good company. My rabbits respond to the sound of the banjo ( they run away when I play run rabbit run) but they may be also in good company, |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: GUEST,ozchick Date: 04 Feb 07 - 08:38 AM My cat (Lucy) loves when i play my guitar and sing. She'll actually come running in from another room and just sit, listening with a happy look on her face. When I started learning the fiddle though, she would run out of the room and find somewhere to hide. Now that my playing has improved, she will stay - but never looks too interested. If i have a violin student and shes's in the lounge room, she will throw a tantrum and start tearing the furniture apart! |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: Maryrrf Date: 04 Feb 07 - 08:44 AM My dog Missie loves to hear me play the guitar and sing. Like Lucy the cat mentioned above she will come into the room with me and listen happily. Nice to have an uncritical, supportive fan, who lives with you! |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: Ron Davies Date: 04 Feb 07 - 09:09 AM One of our cats, Lucy, has very strong preferences. She really like me to play the piano--particularly likes the Beethoven Moonlight Sonata--first movement. She'll climb on the piano--a few modern phrases in the Beethoven while she jumps on the keys on her way to the top of the piano. And listen to that, or Joplin, Bach, parlor songs etc. As long as the concert continues. However, I'm definitely NOT allowed to practice. If I stop and go over a rough passage, she comes right down and sits on the keys. Also, I'm allowed to sing--but sopranos are not. If a soprano (Jan, for instance) tries to sing with the piano, Lucy reaches out her paw from her perch on top of the piano---and tries to put it on the soprano's mouth--evidently, to stop the sound. Doesn't matter how good the soprano is, either. Lucy just does not seem to like high voices. I wonder if a high pitch hurts her ears. |

Subject: RE: Musical preferences of pets From: mack/misophist Date: 04 Feb 07 - 09:10 AM 4 cats, none of which pay any attention to music at all. However, whenever I sneeze at least one will trot out looking interested. |
