Subject: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: GUEST,Noddy Date: 14 Jan 07 - 02:57 PM Hello there folks . Long time since I last popped in. But I have been very busy losing my job, selling a house and moving to Scotland. Well I must tell you of a great bok I am reading at present in is called " 365 ways to change the World" by Michael Norton. It is only £6.99 and if you cannot afford it you can get it from your library. or even visit a web site and get the info from there. It is full of great ideas and of course the more people who carry out these great ideas the better the world becomes. One idea is to end apathy so lets start with that one and buy the book. Others are very easy to do just sitting at your computer for instance there are many web site such as "The Hunger Site " and what you do is visit the site and for every visit a donation is made by a sponsor to feed a hungry person a meal. It cost you nothing. So do it. Other site are linked to it and work similarly with donnations to Breast cancer charity, Child poverty, Enviromental tree planting etc. Go visit and click, click, click. Now I am getting on in years and my eyesight is failing so I have regular checks and get new spectacles. One Charity known as Vision Aid Overseas is very happy to take your old specs if they are not scratched to hell and find someone who could use them. Bifocals are of no use to them. Many opticians in the UK are in on the scheme so the next time you get your eyes tested ask if they are associated to Vision Aid Overseas and they will send off your old specs for you. If not then suggest that they become associated and put up a poster to indicate this in their window. Of course the local papee might like to cover the story and the optician get publicity, more trade and Vision Aid Overseas gets more specs. If they are not keen suggest that you will be taking your ciustom elsewhere! There are lots more like buy a bee!!! Not a goat ,a cow or a camel or a chicken but a BEE and help feed the world. I could go on but then I would just rewrite the book. GO visit the hunger site NOW. www.thehungersite.com The address for Vision Aid Overseas is www.vao.org.uk post to Vision Aid Overseas Crawley RH10 2FZ UK and the book is www.365act.com |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: autolycus Date: 17 Jan 07 - 12:48 PM i also like a new book called "Save Cash and Save the Planet", compiled by Friends of the Earth. This is all at least on time if not too late, given that it's just been reported that the Doomsday Clock has been moved from 7 minuted to midnight (4 years ago) to five minutes to. The encapsulation is in 6 points. 1. Buy less stuff. 2. Cut your fossil-fuel use. 3. Take out the toxins. 4. Choose the local diet. 5. Do what you can. 6. Spread the word. regarding point 5,there are two alternative attitudes. one says, what difference can I possibly make? the other (often said about World Wars)says, I'm doing my bit. Ivor |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: GUEST,Noddy Date: 24 Jan 07 - 04:38 AM I just spent three days and nights at the Celtic Connections putting some of the very simple ideas into practice and spreading the word. The act of saying "please" and "thank you" is so easy to do and helping people do simple tasks was met with great appreciation. These are just good manners but sadly are forgotten by many. Oh Yes must mention a harpist from from Brittany on the Danny Kyle Stage. He was superb! He goes by the name of Tristan La Govic. |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 24 Jan 07 - 09:36 AM "3. Take out the toxins." What does this mean and how do I go about doing it ..., please? |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: EBarnacle Date: 24 Jan 07 - 11:27 AM Regarding point 2, go to my post of a few minutes ago on the "Inconvenient Truth" thread. It is much to long to duplicate here but it describes a product that reduces fuel uses and improves vehicle emissions. Either that or just go directly to ugotmiles.myffi.biz the website I maintain for the company, and read the information. It's a step in the right directions. As our fearless leader said last night, we need to reduce our fossil ful use and emissions by 20%. This can help. |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: GUEST,Mad Jock Date: 25 Jan 07 - 09:58 AM Plant Trees lots and lots of them. Go Guerilla Gardening its great fun. You take a largish sheet of paper and using Origami techniques you turn it into a square cube about the size of a tennis ball is good. (We did it at school many years ago and filled them with water and dropped them out the top of multi-storey bulidings on passers-bye. ) Instead of filling it with water you fill it with a bit of soil/compost/seeds/bulbs etc. Then the fun bit you wander around to an ugly unkempt area and bomb it with your cubes. Best do it under the cover of darkness. The seeds and bulb grow giving colour and beauty to the city. It takes a bit of work, planning and patience but the result is worth it. The more the merrier. |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Jan 07 - 10:30 AM Put in your own garden, whether in the ground or in pots. Don't use toxic chemicals--they mess up the environment and they mess up you. For lots of information on organic gardening, visit http://www.dirtdoctor.com. Make and use compost. That's a start. Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: autolycus Date: 25 Jan 07 - 06:19 PM GUEST Shimrod There are many toxic chemicals in stuff we buy, chemicals used in the food we eat, toxins used in the creation of our environment. We have many chemicals in our bodies and we don't know too much about the long-term effects. Items the book recommends avoiding are artificial musks, used in perfumes, aifresheners, soaps, detergents. Parabens,in makeup, shampoo and toothpaste. Parfum,in soaps, baby products and household cleaners. Phthalates,in PVC,toys, clothing, flooring, wallpaper. Solvents,in paints, varnish. And go for organic and GM-free food.(Do we know of much that we have a profounder relationship with than food?) Those are just swift examples. The book save Cash and Save the Planet has many website addresses at the back. Ivor |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: SINSULL Date: 26 Jan 07 - 09:39 PM I would love to live in Scotland, maybe on some remote island tucked away from time and people. Meantime, if you want to save the world, die. Once we are gone, Mother Nature can get back to cleaning herself up and starting over. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: autolycus Date: 27 Jan 07 - 03:14 AM Surely we're clever enough, scientific enough, knowledgable enough, humane enough, rich enough powerful enough to solve these problems without having to die for the planet to be cleaned up. After all,if nothing else, money talks. Irony alert. Please look "irony" up in a dictionary Ivor |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: Cats Date: 27 Jan 07 - 06:21 AM We are having solar power put in in 3 weeks time for hot water. If it works efficiently we are going to save up and go over to generating electricity too. |

Subject: RE: BS: 365 ways to improve the world From: autolycus Date: 12 Feb 07 - 02:43 PM I thoroughly recommend theHunger Site - feed another every day. And,GUEST noddy, Peace reminded me of one of my fave quotes "Do what you can, where you are, with what you've got." Teddy Roosevelt AND,we have two ways to consider what we can do. 1. What difference can IIIIIII make? 2. I'm doing my bit (the Joining Up gambit response to conscientious objection.) i think one reason these threads get lost is that people see the thread title and think they know where the thread is going.
