Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: akenaton Date: 07 Jan 07 - 11:12 AM Thanks Cap'n.....Very thought provoking, but that's the easy bit. There is an answer but it's many decades away ...if we survive that long. Lets be hard on poverty....Lets be hard on the CAUSES of poverty |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Captain Ginger Date: 07 Jan 07 - 11:16 AM The subject? But that would spoil the surprise and form judgements in the minds of people before they opened the thread. Look upon it like a small, late Christmas present. |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Mrrzy Date: 07 Jan 07 - 07:45 PM Woof. That does put things in perspective, doesn't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 Jan 07 - 08:25 PM Slide your cursor over the link and it says "http://www.miniature-earth.com/" - that's not a bad indication. I was reading another version of this only today in a rather splendid book we picked up in a Christmas Bazaar, "The Earth From the Air", tied up with this travelling exhibition about these matters. You know, the way we manage to shrug off these things as a society - any descendants we have are going to look on us with the same eyes as we tend to look on people who lived comfortably off the backs of slaves, or on Germans in the days of the Holocaust. They won't be able to understand how we could be like that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Bill D Date: 07 Jan 07 - 08:42 PM If those 100 people lived on an island about the size of a football field, they would soon have a notion of what this Earth is heading towards. |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: dianavan Date: 07 Jan 07 - 08:51 PM Exactly right, McGrath. "any descendants we have are going to look on us with the same eyes as we tend to look on people who lived comfortably off the backs of slaves, or on Germans in the days of the Holocaust." |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Mr Red Date: 08 Jan 07 - 07:21 AM The only thought it provoked in me (and provoked is the word) is why can't posters warn about FLASH this one waited a long time, on broadband mind you, to tell me "Adobe Flash Player Download Center Windows" I would appreciate this warning. We have Flash at work but not the one Adobe are pushing. Not very interesting to some - paramount to those on dial-up. |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Bee Date: 08 Jan 07 - 09:20 AM Captain Ginger, it really is unkind not to mention the nature of such links to rural dialup folks. |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Captain Ginger Date: 08 Jan 07 - 09:26 AM Many apologies to all who have clicked on the above link on a dial-up connection - It was thoughtless of me but I'm afraid I have been lulled into a complacent state after enjoying the luxury of a 2Mb broadband connection while still being very rural (it's one of the advantages of living in a very deprived area of Europe that benefits from large amounts of Objective One EU funding). One forgets that there are some places where V90 is still something to dream about! |

Subject: RE: BS: Provocative thread From: Bee Date: 08 Jan 07 - 09:32 AM Dream! I don't even know what it is! In rural Nova Scotia, I dream of the phone co. getting high speed down here, or the cable co. actually wiring for internet this far out. And I don't mean to guilt you, Captain - it's hardly your fault - I just occasionally get grumpy about the inconvenience. |
