Subject: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: Murray MacLeod Date: 06 Jan 07 - 03:04 PM now that I have finally got my YouTube videos to play perfectly, I have a problem with Windows Media Player. basically, it doesn't work and I am fairly sure that it is due to the Zone Alarm Firewall and Antivirus software which I use. I have no intention of changing my firewall or antivirus, it has done a good job of protecting the computer (57,423 access attempts blocked to date), but I would really like to know how to configure it to accept Windows Media Player. It is not at all obvious how one does this ... anybody else on here using Zone-Labs products who has solved this problem ? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: artbrooks Date: 06 Jan 07 - 03:18 PM I am using Windows Media Player v.11 and Zone Alarm 2007 with no problems. The update to Media Player I just did was free - maybe try that? If your ZA controls are the same as mine, go to Program Control > Programs and scroll down to Windows Media Player to see if the settings look screwy. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: Murray MacLeod Date: 06 Jan 07 - 06:53 PM thanks for the input art, but I have no way of knowing if the settings do look screwy. I contacted the AOL helpline twice who gave me advice about altering the settings but nothing works so far . |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 14 Jan 07 - 08:39 PM For Zone Alarm On the Firewall control page, make sure the internet zone slider is set to high. Go to the 'Program Control' Page. You can adjust the slider. At medium, All programs must ask for Internet Access & Server Rights. Once WMP runs and asks you, you just click the box that says something like "allow access & don't ask me again". Robin 141,485 access attempts ... :-) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Jan 07 - 11:14 PM If you have previously ticked the wrong box, by mistake, there is another control page in most firewalls (I don't use ZA because it is such a resource hog, and each successive version gets worse with more useless bells and whistles) showing a lot of programs that you have specifically set to "always allow" OR "ALWAYS DENY", and if you delete the name of the program from that page, and then do as suggested above, the next time you run the affected program it will ask and you can try to get the answer right that time. I get very cross with websites that will not run without cookies being enabled. Who knows what they are collecting in the way of data? Ebay is a prime example. It used to run OK with cookies in "prompt" mode once you have learned which to accept and which you could deny, but for some time now it has refused to run at all unless you automatically accept all cookies from it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 15 Jan 07 - 01:01 AM I should have added that bit too Richard, thanks. Looks like the old Cookie Muncher may have a need again... The Qld Transport Dept now allows you do all sorts of things on line, including renewing your drivers licence, but insists on cookies... "Who knows what they are collecting" I think it is just 'lazy programming'... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Mar 07 - 08:05 PM just thought I would bring "closure" (as Dr Phil would say ) to this thread. the problem I had was nothing to do with Zone-Alarm, the problem was that the box appearing when you click "Tools2/"Options"/"Connect to Internet (overrides other commands)", had been left unticked. I only found this out by poking around at random. They sure don't make things easy, do they ? anyway, I can now watch videos of every format, and also watch TV from around the world... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: nutty Date: 19 Mar 07 - 06:07 AM Go to the Program control page and click on 'Programs' You will be presented with a list of programs that Zone Alarm has identified as needing access to the internet. You control the access requirements by changing the usage. eg click on program to access red cross .. no access question mark .. it asks you first before allowing access green tick .... complete access Most of the programs I have on the list have qeustion marks next to them. The only programms with ticks are those for automatic updates A number including some Windows and all AOL progs have red crosses |

Subject: RE: Tech: Zone-Alarm and Windows Media Player From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Mar 07 - 05:36 PM thanks to all for the continuing suggestions and offers of help. as I said in my post of 18 Mar 07 - 08:05 PM the problem has now been resolved, and it was a very simple matter of ticking a box which had previously been left unticked. |
